iLifeMy wife and I were both admin and share the same data base
How is that set up?
What do you see when you open iPhoto?

Mar 24, 2015 6:15 AM in response to Terence Devlinby johnfrommanorville,Hello,
In system preferences under users, I have four users. Two users have standard permissions and both my wife and I were setup so we admin permissions. This way she could load her own software, etc...
Note: I recently changed her permissions back to standard when this issue starting happing figuring it had something to do with permissions. So currently I am the only one setup with admin permissions under users. Unfortunately this did not solve anything and the pictures are still missing (i.e. the folders show up with a grey icon but when you click on them nothing is there).
Also, not sure it this plays a part, but last week she upgraded to an iPhone 6 and before we went down to the store to get it, I sync her iPhone 5s and downloaded all of the pics from the phone to iPhoto.

iLifeHow did you set up two users sharing the database?
-
Mar 24, 2015 6:57 AM in response to Terence Devlinby johnfrommanorville,ok, I do not remember having to do anything for all my users to see the same data base (meaning we all can see the photos in iPhoto). When iPhoto opens, recent photos have a grey icon and won't open. Most of the older photos are still there and i can not tell if the older photos which are not showing are just from my wifes iPhone or older pics form our camera.

Photos for MacYou had to do something as separate users data is not available to other users
However to share an iPhoto library you need an external drive formatted mac OS extended (journaled) - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support with ownership ignored

Mar 24, 2015 8:09 AM in response to LarryHNby johnfrommanorville, yikes!!! No, I am sharing iPhoto from the local hard drive. At one point i probably changed the permissions to all read write for the folder. Now if I move this file to a separate drive will my pictures be saved?
Note: My computer gets backed up via time machine to an apple Time Capsule.

Photos for MacYes your picture will be saved
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Mar 25, 2015 11:24 AM in response to LarryHNby johnfrommanorville,Ok, thanks for the info. In the future i might get an external drive so we can all share the same folder.
I checked last night and i have two different logins pointed at my iPhoto library. So when the other person loads photos they go into my folder (i made it a shared folder). From what it sounds like above, iPhoto is not designed to work like this and should be kept separate (i.e. each person should have their own iPhoto file if using the local hard drive).
So in the short term, could i create another iPhoto file in their own library for the person who is current sharing mine and point them away from my folder? And if i do this, should this resolve my issues with iPhoto?
Lastly, is there any instructions on how to set up a new iPhoto folder?
Thanks again. This has been very helpful.

Photos for MacRight - shared folders used to work but no longer do - you need separate libraries or an external drive as described in my previous link
to start a new library hold down the option key while launching iPhoto and create a new library -- or you might want to copy the existing library to the second account so it starts with wha you have today
