Q: iMessage not showing contact names

I just recently downloaded and installed OS X Mavericks on my 2011 iMac and trying to get up and running with the new iMessage app. But there are two major bugs I can figure out how to fix if anyone can help me fix these problems or comment if your having the same issues that would be a big help.

1: When receiving a message from someone in my contacts list/address book, their names do not apper next to the message, but rather only their phone numbers. I have went thought the view options and selected show contacts name and also tried adding a name to the existing number with no results. Does anyone know how to fix this bug?

2: The lag time between SMS/iphone messages and the time it takes to show up in iMessage on my mac is rather long. There is about a 3 minute delay before the text message conversation shows up from my phone to computer. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks

I tried dragging, uploading...it doesn't seem to like my png files, even though they follow the file name convention.

    Hi,

I trend to keep all my Screen Shots on my Desktop.

I use the Camera Icon in the reply box and it  (Browse) takes me to the last folder I used on my computer.

You can then select the pic you want and "Insert" it.

Alternatively you an have the folder where you keep your Pics and drag the required item to the Reply box directly as this also works.

You have to make sure the cursor in not in the middle of a word or sentence as it is break it up as it is placed at the cursor  (and not where you might mouse to as in other apps).

The Software that runs these Communities will make backups of what you are typing.

At times it will tell that it can't do this with the message you posted.

It can do it as you insert a pic but I have not seen this myself for a while.

You will sometimes (more frequently than I like) that the System has logged you out.  I work in tabs and keep one at the Login/Welcome page and refresh at that one before losing anything in the current reply box.

Hi, I looked through this thread and maybe I'm just missing it or can't read correctly!

But I just synced my contacts through iCloud last night, to my new iPhone. I did a backup using my computer, but my computer only seems to have my pictures in my backup and did not transfer my contacts (its a new computer as well). However, most of my contacts have all been updated except for the most recent ones.

My newer contacts that do not show up in my contacts folder, do show up when I type a new iMessage, once the iMessage is sent however, their name disappears and only shows the number.

Is there an easy fix or am I missing something? Thank you!

    Hi,

On the Mac in System Preferences > iCloud the Contacts items needs to be selected.

On the iPhone in Settings iCloud the Contacts items need to be selected.

I.e. they have to be "On" everywhere all the  time.

If the Sync is not On then the Mac version will default to "On My Mac" which may not match what is actually in iCloud (literally the Cloud version of this you can access in a web browser).

This can lead to a lack of Messages managing to link to the Address Card to find full details on Names and pictures to use.

If you think the Sync is On then open the Contacts app and check the cards you can see first of all.

Then Open the Preferences > Accounts and check what is in use.

It should be your preferred choice of sync and not any other (or at least not active ones).

If everything appears to be in order try a PRAM Reset.

Restart the Mac and Hold on CMD+ALT+P+R keys until you have heard three Start up Bongs then let the Start up continue.

I had the same issue where the contact names would not show up in a message. All I had to do was restart my computer!

This is such a no-brainer solution that I didn't even think to try it - worked perfectly.  Make sure that the applications: messages, addressboook, mail etc are shut down while that process is running.

    Hi,

Apple don't make an iMessages app for Android.

The Login from each device is unique and uses more then just the Apple ID and the password.

On a Mac it make use of the Mac's Serial Number to make an Authorisation Token.  I have not worked out what is used on the iPhone.

I doubt if the app you have will be allowed to Login to the iMessages servers.

YES this worked!  I did pretty much the same thing.

-Open your Address Book (app called Contacts) on your iMac or Macbook

    -Open Preferences

-Make sure your iCloud is in use

-Add any other contact account you have, for me adding my Google contacts fixed the problem immediately

    Hope this helps.

I just fixed this issue on my macpro but it was related to accounts. In the contacts app it was only pulling my icloud contacnt and not my goolgle contacts. This may be some peoples problems.

    1. Go to the contacts application

    2. Click on the contacts tab in the top right and select "Accounts"

    3. Then you can check which accounts you have added to your contacts for that device. When you click on an account (icould, google, etc), you can see what is being imported and you can select or de select what you want.

I was for whatever reason not importing my google contacts (which maybe is how it defaulted) so was getting just phone number imessages from people. But this fixed it. Hope this helps.

This same process can be done on your iphone by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Under each account you basically see the same information as on your computer.

Not really that intuitive and not sure when this problem is going to be ironed out. I have issues with it all the time each time i add a new device. There are too many dang clouds out there.

Hope this helps those who didn't find the other posts helpful!
