Q: Bootcamp issues, tried 9 times (rather long post)

Hi there,

I am having a real problem trying to install either Win7 Ultimate or Win8Pro on a boot-camp partition....I have rally tried about 9 times with no success, 6 times for Win7 and 3 fore Win8.

I start with the boot-camp assistant and do NOT set the opin to cerate a windows isntall disk, as I have trhe dvd's with me (although I did select that oprion on 2 of the occasions which also did not work.

With all of the Win7 attempts I have come up with a "please insert a boot-disk and press any key", or sometimes just a blank black screen.

The closed I get is with Win8 Pro and to get there I hadn ro reboot and hold the alst key down to selct a boot device, of which there are many but the a 2 windows ones, (one is the windows disk sitting in the DVD drive) and the other is an efi boot. I tried the windows disk biut got the same error, with the sentence insert a boot disk and press any key etc, so I thought I would try the efi boot, which then gave a me a message.pess any key to install from the DVD, which I did and then finally I get a  windows installation screen :-)

So all was going well with the install until I get to select the boot-camp drive to install to, and there is an error and you cannot install windows on the drive 0 partition 3, so I first formatted the disk form the install screen, but get the same error.

So, after looking in the internet and going back the the beginning, formatted the disk as ex fat, as it seemed this had worked for others online, but nope, still no lick with that.

I am using a 2 year old iMac under Mavericks and can dual boot to Yosemite, so have tried this with both versions of OSX.

Back when I had mountain lion/lion etc, I had successfully installed windows onto a boot-camp partition, but that disk eventually died and I did not have a spare win-clone copy.

I know I can use and have/do use VMware of similar, but some windows software will not install on a VM. Now you are probably wondering why on earth do you want to put windows on your mac i the first instance.....?

Easy answer for me, I get to run my windows apps natively on my awesome mac hardware :-)

Hope someone can help with an answer...?

kind regards

Rossco

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands? Do you have a Fusion drive?

    Here's the list.....

But I also had another thought, you mention sata & pci disks foir the external under Yosemite option. In my external drives that sisk is a sata disk, so if I can connect the esata connection to the mac using an esata/thunderbolt adapter, would that be the same as connecting a sata drive?

My newertech mini stacks have sata drive in them and my connector can be fw, usb3, esata etc...?

I have not got all my externals &aside from time machine drives, turned on at present. No I don't beleive I have a fusion drive

You can try with the eSATA-to-TB or other adapters. OS X may not have appropriate drivers, but it is worth a test. You should be able to install Windows on the internal disk.

The output of Fdisk shows a single entry, so BCA failed to create a proper MBR.

If you run BCA, are you allowed to partition and create a BC/Windows partition?

    Hi,

yes I can create the partition and get to the stage where BCA reboots the mac to install windows, I just never the the windows instilation come up...

and its rally getting to be a pain, must be 15+ attempts now....ggggrrrrr

When I had my MacPro 5 years ago, I never had amything like this.....probably should have got the new mac pro instead of the imac, but in saying that, I do think my imac is awesome :-)....doesn't mean I won't get a MacPro though further down the track :-)

Can you get to the stage where Windows installation fails and then we can look at the disk layout? Since you have an iMac 13,2, it should have a GPT partition and an MBR in place, which is where your problem stems from.

Also, please make sure you are using a USB2 flash drive for drivers. USB3 will not work. A USB3 can cause failures where a Pre-Boot Windows environment does not exist for the Installer to work properly.

The MBR and GPT are correct. Are you able to read your physical DVD on the OSX side?

Please ensure your USB is USB2. You can plug it in on the OSX side and check under System Report -> USB and check under High-Speed, If it shows up elsewhere, it will not work.

Yes I can read the physical DVD and its contents using both fire-wire 800 and usb3.

And yes, plugged a usb2 stick directly into back of iMac...no hub.

System report sees it in firewire and SS...

Man I never had anything like this go so wrong for this long when I was a Windows user.....
