Q: the Mac App Store application was removed suddenly by sudo command

I need to remove and reinstall Xcode app on My OS X Yosemite v10.10.1 (MacBook Pro with retina display), but I made mistake by suddenly command sudo rm -r /Applications (instead of sudo rm -r /Applications/Xcode.app).

Hereafter the Mac App Store application is missing (and some applications too though).

I wonder, how to reinstall my Mac App Store application and perhaps some default applications start from when I purchase my Mac (purchase on January 2013).

I found this advice: If the Mac App Store application was removed after installing the Mac OS X v10.6.6 Combo Software Update.

But, after I download it and start to update processing, it notify me that this update requires Mac OS X version 10.6 (as I expected).

I would appreciate for any advice and suggestion concerning my problems.

Thank you very much.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

If you have a backup from before the time you made this mistake, you can boot into Recovery mode by holding down the Command and R keys at startup and choose Restore from Backup.

P.S. Your model of MBP came with OS X 10.8, not 10.6, so in recovery mode you can choose install OS.

Yes, you are right, my MBP came with OS X 10.8. And after I update it into OS X 10.10, I have problem with my netcdf, therefore I intend to remove Xcode before I reinstall it again from the very start step.

Alright then, if I follow your suggestion to reboot into recovery mode as your suggestion, how about my files? Are they will safe or not?

Thank you for reply and suggestion concerning my problems.

    Hi,

Recovery mode won't delete your files, unless you do a clean install, which means erasing your startup disk and installing a basic version of the OS.

Presumably, you have a backup of your startup disk on an external HD, either in Time Machine or a clone, or both. in that case you can use Migration Assistant to move your files back. Move your data to a new Mac - Apple Support

See the section on "Migrate from a Time Machine backup or external drive."

    Dear Cunnla,

Thank you very much for your attention on my problems.

From your suggestion, I just remember with my time machine.

Then I open my time machine and directory Applications from the last time before I remove the Mac App Store applications.

I copy the App store.app from time machine to Downloads folder and successful launch it eventhough I couldn't paste it into Applications Directory.

Now I can access to my Mac App Store and update some software and Yosemite OS X 10.10.2.

That's all my update and once again thank you very much for your attention and suggestion.

    Cheers ^_^
