Q: Bootcamp issues, tried 9 times (rather long post)

Hi there,

I am having a real problem trying to install either Win7 Ultimate or Win8Pro on a boot-camp partition....I have rally tried about 9 times with no success, 6 times for Win7 and 3 fore Win8.

I start with the boot-camp assistant and do NOT set the opin to cerate a windows isntall disk, as I have trhe dvd's with me (although I did select that oprion on 2 of the occasions which also did not work.

With all of the Win7 attempts I have come up with a "please insert a boot-disk and press any key", or sometimes just a blank black screen.

The closed I get is with Win8 Pro and to get there I hadn ro reboot and hold the alst key down to selct a boot device, of which there are many but the a 2 windows ones, (one is the windows disk sitting in the DVD drive) and the other is an efi boot. I tried the windows disk biut got the same error, with the sentence insert a boot disk and press any key etc, so I thought I would try the efi boot, which then gave a me a message.pess any key to install from the DVD, which I did and then finally I get a  windows installation screen :-)

So all was going well with the install until I get to select the boot-camp drive to install to, and there is an error and you cannot install windows on the drive 0 partition 3, so I first formatted the disk form the install screen, but get the same error.

So, after looking in the internet and going back the the beginning, formatted the disk as ex fat, as it seemed this had worked for others online, but nope, still no lick with that.

I am using a 2 year old iMac under Mavericks and can dual boot to Yosemite, so have tried this with both versions of OSX.

Back when I had mountain lion/lion etc, I had successfully installed windows onto a boot-camp partition, but that disk eventually died and I did not have a spare win-clone copy.

I know I can use and have/do use VMware of similar, but some windows software will not install on a VM. Now you are probably wondering why on earth do you want to put windows on your mac i the first instance.....?

Easy answer for me, I get to run my windows apps natively on my awesome mac hardware :-)

Hope someone can help with an answer...?

kind regards

Rossco

Actually now that I think about it, IMO the most roll solid connections I have ever had have been with FireWire...all formats of USB have been very flaky for me on the mac for the most part.

just my 2cents, getting really annoyed with this mac right now.....

Windows Installer will not support USB3 or Firewire for reading the DVD, which will will give  you no boot device or black screens. Can you find an external USB2 Optical drive?

    Hubs will cause problems.

    OK,

well i I finally managed to get it done, on about the 20th attempt (bloody frustrating) to say the least!

I used the external USB3 optical drive connected with a USB2 cable, and a usb2 stick drive, went through all the process again, rebooted and still no go when restarts, so I did a manual power off, then restarted using the Alt key option to get the drives that may show up.

Once the boot options appeared, there were 2 optical selections to choose from, one was EFI and the other was WINDOWS, along with Macintosh HD etc, as per for all the other boot options. I did not select EFI as that hadn't worked before, although saying that neither had the WINDOWS option worked before.

But that was using USB3 cables ad connections, this time was using USB2, double clicked the WINDOWS option and it worked.....what a relief!

was it worth it you ask?, well for me yes as I really needed to get this working so I can run a hardware based system to run Windows as a  lot of the software I use will not install on a VM (which was initially my first choice). If you are just using it for the sake of it, then I wouldn't bother  with this many attempts.

Real learning curve, that's for sure and I will never fully trust usb3 again, it just seems so flaky.

Thank you to Loner T, for spending all the time and help for me, really appreciated :-)

    Cheers

You can trust USB3. The issue is that the Windows installer media does not have USB3 drivers. Once you fully install Windows and install BC drivers, you should have USB3 connectivity. You should test it since you do have the ability to connect a USB3 device. You do not want to find out later. This is a clean fresh install and now you have a method by which you can install it again, if necessary.

I would also highly recommend a backup of OS X (via Time Machine or any other tool of your choice) and backup Windows to an external NTFS-formatted disk using Windows Backup and Restore. It will stand you in long stead.

    hi Loner T,

Yep USB 3 works on Windows OK, may consider using Winclone to image the bootcamp drive...

    Cheers
