Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.  page 128 iPad user manual.

    Force quit the Mail app:

    1. Double-click the Home button
    2. Swipe left or right and find the Mail app
    3. Swipe up on the preview of the Mail app to force quit it

    Then do a "reset"

    1. Hold down on both the Home AND Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple logo on black screen (about 10 seconds).
    2. When you see the Apple logo on the black screen, let go of both buttons.

    Hope this fixes your issue!

I have this same issue but with an iPhone 5. I have removed the exchange account, re-added the account. I have tried force quitting the application, and hard rebooting the device. Nothing seems to help. Once you hard boot the mail will load one time, but if you close the app then try to open it again you get the same issue of it crashing.

I have verified that the exchange account is working fine both in Outlook as well as in the web interface for outlook. Not sure what else to try at this point.

The device was recently updated to iOS 8.2 which is the only thing that I can think of that is the cause, although we have many other devices of the same type that are not having this issue.

    Other suggestions?

That's a great workaround Robert, however I am still seeking a root cause for why the native mail app is failing. My user is not keen to change applications but will if no solution is found.

It would have been best if you started a new thread.

I'd see if you can find the crash log.

    http://bjango.com/help/crashlog/

    https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/technotes/tn2151/_index.html#//apple_ref /doc/uid/DTS40008184

How to find & read the console log.  You could read them in an  ios 6  app.  In ios 7.x  the existing ios console reading apps stopped working.  One listed claims to work in ios 8.x.  Another way to read is to attach the ipad to itunes to read.

should work for any app:  http://elevenworks.com/ipad-console-log/

    Hi,

These were the steps that I tried and the results of my troubleshooting:

    1. Remove exchange, reboot device, re-add exchange - no change
    2. I tried installing a different mail application and there was still no change
    3. I cleared all settings, keeping all data and tried the steps above again and still no change
    4. I wiped the device and set up as a new phone and still no change when trying to add the mail account
    5. I tried loading the mail account onto another phone that was proven working previously and I had the same issue again
    6. Thinking now that this was more related to the active sync profile, I went through and tried to see what part of the sync was causing corruption. Sometimes a bad calendar entry or contact can cause a corrupted active sync profile. I went through and paired mail with the contacts to see if the error occurred, then tested the mail with calendars, then mail with reminders, and then finally with notes. Seeing some errors with reminders and calendars I had our exchange admin move the users mailbox to a another DB which we believe would correct any corruption to the profile.
    7. Something else that came up that I could have been tried would be to use the /cleanreminders and /cleanfreebusy switch when starting the users mailbox. I didn't get a chance to test that but could have tried that before moving the mailbox to another DB.
    8. This issue has been resolved from my perspective. I was able to rule out any issue with the iPhone, or native applications and iOS update that had been applied. It was our determination that it was a corrupted Active Sync profile.
