Q: OSX Maverick Gray Screen at Wake Up

Hi,

I think I have asked this question before and gotten the right answer. Somehow I am not able to find that discussion anymore.

Without any changes, my MBP has started to act like it has hibernated. If I have the lid closed up for many hours (overnight) and when I open it back again, the screen is ghost-like for a few seconds and the system gradually comes up. At times the computer is very slow at the beginning and way after the commands and programs are available again.

The last time I had posted this I think the resolution was something about changing the power saving. And I have checked the power saving and the computer is scheduled never to go to sleep - on external or battery power.

As I said, this has just started happening a couple of days ago and nothing has changed about the computer, its software, or settings. The only strange thing is that it started when I travelled to another state for vacation. I know this is strange, but that is the only event.

Any thoughts is appreciated.

It is the hibernatemode. Apparently an image of the active computer will be saved before hibernation and restored after awakening from hibernation. Here is a link with information that I have used: http://thornelabs.net/2013/01/16/os-x-change-hibernatemode-with-pmset-for-instan t-wake-from-sleep.html

I have not tested it yet, and will get back with test results.

The new forum format does not seem to allow editing of an original discussion topic or its content. Anyone knows why?

There is a time limit on how long you can edit a post. I think it is about 25 - 30 minutes, but may be less.

    Hello Farzad_K,

Based on your description of what you are seeing ("hibernation"-type behavior when waking from sleep while charging), it sounds like you may be experiencing the following Safe Sleep behavior:

    1. With the release of the OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 supplemental update 2.0, a new feature was introduced to enter safe sleep after four hours of the computer being connected to AC power. This is an effort to comply with the European Energy Standards (ErP Lot6). This will only occur if there is no wireless or Ethernet activity and no activity from external devices such as USB storage devices.

This is normal behavior for the following models:

      • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
      • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012 and later)
      • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 and later)
      • iMac (Late 2012 and later)
      • Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)

Yes, thanks, I have discovered that I have to suffer because of some European rules.

I encountered this issue once a while back and fixed it and have had no problem until a few days ago. Before a few days ago, I would come back home from work, lift the lid of my notebook while attached to a charger and bang - the screen would be there. Now all of a sudden I do the same thing except that I see a recovering OS. I wonder why these changes might happen by themselves.

I did reset the hibernatemode to zero and left the computer alone for several hours and came back to it and opened the lid and bang - the display came back but the computer's brain was still slow.

I wished Apple would give us options, and in fact, when we set it up at the beginning, it should set up the US computers based on US uses and regulations.
