Q: Macbook Pro Charger PLEASE HELP!

hey, I have a 13 inch macbook pro (late 2011). I have a few questions since it is going to be my first time buying a genuine macbook charger:

  • which charger should I get (theres a 45,60 and 85W, I don't want to risk getting the wrong one)?
  • How do I avoid it from over heating (the ones I've bought from ebay tend to do this a lot, it can't be trusted)?
  • and also, do the chargers in retail include an extension (the ones I've gotten from ebay don't include one)?

You may contact Apple Store or look into the online one to see if you can locate

one in the web store. Another source that sometimes is a slightly better price

when they have the correct one(s) in stock is OWC macsales... With a MB/Pro

you should not use the 45w, as that is for the MB/Air & will not work. Depending

on the size of display, if the unit has a DVD optical drive, and other hardware that

may require a large capacity output charger (to run the MB while charging it, too)

then consider the higher output based on the model specifications.

Note there are MagSafe and MagSafe2 adapter versions, so be sure to get the

    correct version for your computer, or if needed, get the small convertor plug;

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD504ZM/A/magsafe-to-magsafe-2-converter

•Find the right power adapter and cord for your Mac notebook - Apple Support

85w MagSafe for MacBook Pro '06-'11 new:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MC556LLA/

    60w MagSafe for 13" MacBook Pro '06 - '11 models, new:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MC461LLA/

You can use a higher output adapter than the original when the magsafe type jack

is the same, as the adapter will not generally over-power the computer battery...

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/bargains/

The good thing with a source such as macsales OWC is you can contact them to

be sure the item is correct; you can also check specs to see which adapter is the

correct one if attempting to match the original specs. But some sources may only

have the 85w version. (They also offer a 45w model suited only for the MB /Air.)

The Apple Store has a battery that may be OK, if in stock. Ask local store or

call main Apple 800# and have your product serial number handy. I tried to

get confirmation of Apple part availability -- but the Apple Store (US) times-out.

In any event, hopefully this helps somewhat.

    Good luck & happy computing!

Generally not, however some computers did ship new with the long cord.

A communication with a seller should clarify the presence of lack thereof.

I noticed the owc site shows a new version of power adapter that says it

includes the 6 ft power cable with the factory-sealed adapter; this is for

a retina model macbook pro, and is a newer Magsafe2 version:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MD506LLARB/

    However not all do.

Some only have the tiny flip-prong adapter end included.

This AC extension is the same kind that the iBook G4 and PowerBook G4,

& the early Apple Express wi-fi base station used. Perhaps others(?)

The cord for most if not all of them (this has US-type end) is like this:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/PWRCBLMSA/

Any of those with your local mains power plug on the end should work OK.

Or some other region, with a passive converter plug to use your wall socket.

Apple should have replacements, or other-sourced versions of same spec

long power cable should be capable. I've found spares in second-hand stores

since they are cheap when available. Usually $1. sometimes a sack of 4 for

under $5. I have spares, for my Apple portable adapters, & Express base.

So sorry to have missed that, my attempt to look into Apple Store for link failed

when I couldn't get into the Apple Store (US) secondary pages at all last night.

Some of my online acquaintances are from AU and NZ. Mostly PC folks, tho.

    Good luck & happy computing!

The above reply timed out after lagging awhile, so I was unable to add

information found about the description of product such as those at OWC

where they may have something listed as "bulk" packaged, vs "retail"...

The retail packaged product tends to say if there is a 6ft cord (near 2m.)

included, or if the toggle duck-head is the only connector included in box.

Since the above timed out a minute or two before my attempt to edit, the

actual wording was more explicit and detailed based on my then findings.

New 'official retail' packaged power adapters should include the long cord.

A bulk packaged item perhaps destined to a school or business situation

does not appear to offer the long cord and if present, the box is smaller.

Good luck in locating what you need for the MacBook Pro to function!
