Q: Upgrading 2009 Macbook

I have a mid-2009 white MacBook with 2GB of memory in two slots - 800Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. I see the spinning beachball far too often. Can I upgrade to 4GB by replacing the memory using the slots I have? And if so, will it improve the performance of my MacBook or should I bit the bullet and upgrade to a  newer model?
