Q: iTunes automatically starts playing when iPhone 5 (w iOS 7.0.2) is connected to car radio via an Apple cable

I'm using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2, regardless it is the most recent update

When I plug my phone into my car radio's USB port (Apple cable, not knock off) iTunes starts to play the very first song in my large iTunes library.

I plug into the USB port to charge it and to connect the phone to radio in order to use hands free audio.

I have tried two or three different cables, it happens with all cables and again all are actual Apple cables.

I do not recall this happening with iOs 6 or at least as much.

With iOs 7 it happens every f***ing time. Extremely annoying and dangerous (I may get so frustrated by this that one day I might just smash the phone or the car radio :-) to the equipment.

I have to unlock my phone, go to iTunes and pause or stop the song/iTunes.

The app does not show as being open, that is why I have to go iTunes itself, the old fashioned way, so to speak.

It sometimes happens when I plug my headset in (also Apple brand, the basic ones that come with the iPad and iPhones) to phone and have tried the two different ones I have. It only seems to happen if my phone is not in use (i.e. I am on a call and switch to the headset it does not happen)

Interestingly this issue with the headphones and iTunes automatically starting happened more with iOS 6  and than with iOS 7. Ironically the opposite is true with the car radio, USB port cable, charging and iPhone — it rarely happened with iOS 6.0 but with iOS 7.0 it always happens.

I cannot seem to find a fix here but I do see I am not the only one with this annoying issue.

Please someone (APPLE!)  figure out a fix.

PS I have even considered NOT having any of my music on my phone — none at all —  which not only would solve the problem (I would hope!)  but be extremely inconvenient and defeating the purpose of only having an iPhone vs an iPhone and an iPod.

PPS -  I probably left out something really relevant, like what color is my car , so if I did, please let me know.

I found a work-around to this problem (at least it worked for me): I made a new playlist with ONE song, moved the slider to the end of the song, and that took care of it.

You need to turn music player off. Tap white button twice. All open apps will appear. Swipe the open app up. It will disappear. This closes the app. Do this to the music app. Now you will no longer have a song playing thus your car will not have any song to play.

The problem is not with the iphone. It is with the cars audio settings.  Go to "Bluetooth devices> advanced> auto play and select auto play off.  I dealt with this aggrivating issue for almost two years before figuring it out.  The cars bluetooth is signaling the iphone to turn on and play even if your cars radio is not tuned to Bluetooth audio. It does this so if/when you do select Bluetooth audio it can quickly play without having to be prompted to connect.  Try this fix and it should solve the issue. i have a 2010 f350 with nav and sync. Depending on your cars media device the ques may be different to get to the Autoplay feature but nonetheless this is the issue.  Hope this helps Someone.

I found a bandaid approach that seems to work.  Go to:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/silent-tracks-various-useful/id366737722

You can download one or more "songs" of complete silence.  In iTunes, you can right click on the Song, select "Get Info" then select the "Sorting" tab.  Under "Sort As," you can put "A A A A" or whatever caption you want at the top.  You can also do this with any song and make it go to the top.  To be sure it worked, I turned my phone off and then turned it on before starting the car.

It's not perfect, but it gives you time to react without getting really annoyed with hearing the same song start up each time.

Your response made me just crack up, thank you. I'm hoping the waiting for the now playing track to end and turning off repeat thing will do the trick.

Apple has to know this problem exists. A little while back U2 released a free album that they automatically added to your itunes account. Everytime I got in my car iTunes started playing U2. It caused kind of an uproar that they had to release a U2 album removal tool lol.

I just got a new phone and I downloaded a ringtone pack So that is playing automatically right now which led me here. It's a little worse than Jackson 5.

It is crazy to think I have to delete this thing I just brought to fix this. But it's worth it. I guess no more purchases from itunes lol.

I am at 8.3 and it does it ALL the time, on it's own.  I hate it.  Does anyone have an answer?

Does anyone know how to take iTunes off of the control center?  I think this is where it might be triggered

    You can't.

I think this is where it might be triggered

It's not. It did the same before control center was around...

I have an iPhone 6 and this wasn't happening to me on this new phone up until a few days ago! It happened all the time on iPhone 5.  Can someone please help??

I've tried most a lot of proposed solutions but they don't work! I want to be able to charge my phone and still be able to play my app while plugged in to the USB drive in my car.

When you don't want this behavior quit the Music app like this:

Double click the Home button to reveal the app switcher. Flick up on the page preview of the app you want to quit. The page preview will fly away and disappear. That quits the app.
