Q: Folders in mail box

You can only do it with IMAP email account; to do this:

1. Go to your email account in the Mail app and look at the window where your Inbox, Trash folder and Sent folder are.

2. Tap the Edit button

3. Tap Add Mailbox (bottom)

Note: If there is no Edit button, your email account is not a IMAP account

When you tap add new mailbox at the bottom, does it then say name with your email provider under that. If so where it says name is where you add a new mailbox. Type your name where it says name then tap save. Now check to see if you have a new mailbox.

FYI for anyone that it may help: In my experience the 'Unable to create Mailbox on server' message is caused by an incorrect IMAP Path Prefix. The default is "/" but if you are using shared virtual hosting it probably needs to be "INBOX" instead. When you look at your email account in Mail, if all the folders below Inbox {Drafts, Junk, Sent, Trash} are indented, this indicates the path is wrong. For iOS 7: from the Home screen, go to Settings > Mail,Contacts,Calendars > Your IMAP account > Account. Then, in the panel that pops up, tap Advanced, then go down to IMAP Path Prefix and type "INBOX" (case sensitive). Swap back over to Mail and the account should automatically update, and the folders will no longer be indented, and you should be able to create/delete folders (Apple calls them Mailboxes) to your heart's desire.

HHi there, i hade the same problem, and found a shocking result, when I wanted to creat a folder social and typed in SOC it came up in the suggestion bar SOCIAL, so if you just press save it won't work cause it auto filled SOCIAL_ with a space afterwards, so what you have to do is press backspace and then save!! Hey guys it f**kin worked by me!! Give it a try and reply!!

I have been all over the internet looking for a solution to my Mailbox problem.........I kept getting the error that a Mailbox could not be created on this server.

Then I found your posting. I went down to IMAP Path Prefix and replaced the "/" with INBOX, and now I can create folders on my iPhone. Thank you!

But now I have another question. Why didn't these new folders I created transfer over to my iPad? They didn't. Furthermore, on my iPad (also running iOS 8.2), when I tap on Advanced there is no IMAP Path Prefix listing. So I can't implement your solution on the iPad. What else can I try on it?

I had this same problem and it kept not allowing me to create a folder, and I was using the autofill for the folder name, not realizing it would automatically add the space after the word.  As soon as i typed in the folder name without using the autofill, the folder was created fine. 

An easy fix to at least start with before having to look into the paths and email servers!

I read this and thought this was the craziest thing I have ever read. No offense to the author of this post. I have been on the phone for an hour with an Apple  support person  troubleshooting why I kept getting the same error message when trying to create a folder in my Gmail account on my iPhone. Every time it kept saying  "unabl to connect to server." We tried changing the forward slash to INBOX. Nothing! Finally,  A supervisor about on the phone and we troubleshoot it for another hour to no avail. She promised that she would research it and get back to me tomorrow. So I looked on this for him and when I read what was said about typing in the folder name and backspacing,  it just sounded silly enough to give it a try. And I'll be darn ....,IT WORKED!!!!!

You can absolutely knock  me down with a feather.  I have never heard of such a thing and don't care to know why it works. But I am so glad that you posted what you did because I would've never in 1 million years have thought to try that. But thanks  so much because it definitely works

It took me two weeks of searching to find this solution to the error "Unable to create mailbox - the mailbox couldn't be created on the server", when trying to create new Mailboxes (Folders) on a IMAP server from an iPhone 6s. The solution that worked for me was to go to to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > (your named) Account > Advanced and in the 'IMAP Path Prefix' box to type in the word "INBOX" - in capitals, without the quotes and check there was no space after.

After doing this the new top-level mailboxes that I had previously created on the server (via Thunderbird on a PC) were no longer indented under the main Inbox. Thank you so much!
