Q: The copy of the installer app failed.

I'm trying to create a USB bootable with Yosemite, but the process doesn't complete.

I launched the command from terminal as explained here

/Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/YOSEMITE/ --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app

and I got the following output:

Ready to start.

To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/YOSEMITE/.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: Y

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...

Copying installer files to disk...

The copy of the installer app failed.

Everything goes fine until almost the end. It seems the USB volume is unmounted abruptly because it disappears from the desktop and I got the message asking to eject it before removing it. After that, I get the error that the copy of the installer fails.

I'm running OS X 10.10.1, I downloaded the Yosemite Image from App Store.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program which will do all the work for you.

Eric, do you know how to update a USB drive that I created with DiskMaker x 4b4 from 10.10.1 to 10.10.3?

Per error "The copy of the installer app failed.":

If you are like me and don't want to just use a third party installer as a band-aid, make sure you cover a couple bases:

    1) "sudo" (Switch User DO, where omitting -u implies user = super user)

    2) make sure your USB is large enough (8GB, or just FYI: I got away with a 5.9GB partition on my 64GB stick; where this was my problem: I was trying to reuse a smaller partition (that worked for Maverick); I guess you get a generic error, as opposed to something more useful like "not enough space")

    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USBNAMEHERE --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction

IVe been having the same issue.

im running Mavericks 10.9.5 on a 17" MBP.

i Downloaded the Yosemite 10.10.5 installer and formatted a 16gb usb drive as Untitled, with 1 partition, and a GUID table.

using the following command in terminal:

    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --application path /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointernaction

it then goes through and erases the sub disk, but when it gets to copying files, it takes ages. The last one I've just done took 56minutes to copy. terminal then says

    'copy complete'

    Making disk bootable...

Couldnt mount dmg /Volumes/ Install OS X Yosemite/Install OS X Yosemite.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg (error code 112)Mount of outer dmg failed.

    Done.

I'Ve looked through so many other forum posts, and whilst this seems to work for almost everybody else, it continues to fail for me. I've also re-downloaded the installer (thinking that could be an issue), I've checked and repaired all my disk permissions and those are fine, I've tried different sub sticks but continue to get the same error. I've also tried the DiskMaker app, but even that failed.

would really appreciate ANY help on this one. I want to upgrade to Yosemite before its replaced by El capitan.

    thanks
