Q: The phone number "is not registered with iMessage"

Hi everyone,

Right now I can't seem to send some text messages from my OS X. Here is a list of things I have done that will have caused the error:

  • I fresh installed Yosemite about 2 days ago
  • I updated my iPhone to 8.1 this afternoon
  • I paired my device (I was able to send some texts from OS X)
  • I fresh installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone
  • I can't send some text messages from my computer

When I start a new conversation on iMessage, the name of the person remains red. When I try to send a message I get a popup saying: "<the number> is not registered with iMessage". The handoff is well configured because I am able to see an icon appear in the dock when I use the notes app.

What can I do to make this functionality work again?

Thanks

Same here mate. I guess there's nothing we can do about for now, just have to wait for further updates from Apple.

Glenn's fix does solve the problem temporarily though. Doesn't seem like a solid fix for now.

This is for the general thread.  Between three Macs and one iPhone, everything was exchanging text messages with non-iPhone users except one Mac.  All settings were the same across all three Macs.  After investigating, the difference was in Settings on the iPhone.  Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.  For some reason, the Mac in question was not turned on in this menu.  When I turned it on, the iPhone sent a security code to the problem Mac.  I entered the code into the iPhone.  then restarted Messages on the Mac and everything on the Mac began working like all the others.  Hope that helps.

Thanks for your suggestion. Looks like this is an extremely common problem.

I've tried everything, and still cannot message some iPhone users from my Macs when I can from my iPhone. So, I reckon the issue is with their settings, and not something I am doing or haven't done. Because I have done everything and tried all suggestions.

As an aside, I tried your suggestion. Guess what? I don't have the same option string you posted. ("...iPhone.  Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.") I think it's because I have an old iPhone running iOS 7. Funny enough, it's mainly all the people with the same older iPhones like the 4 and the 4S that i can no longer message using my Macs. I could when I first got the iMac, now I can't from either the iMac or the new MBP.

Never mind, while it's a bit of a pain, it's not the end of the world. A nuisance I can work around.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've passed them on to others who have been helped. So thanks again.

Hasn't helped my problems, so I thought I'd just make this suggestion in case it applies to others- I have an older iPhone running iOS7. The people I can no longer message from my iMac and MBP also have older iPhones (4 and/or 4S). Could this be the problem for some people? A simple incompatibility of operating systems? That planned obsolescence that Apple appear to have embraced? Just a thought. Haven't had reply from Apple other than advice to buy a shiny new iPhone 6! Lol!

I have no problems with messaging any other users from my Macs except for one, including those using 'droid phones or whatever else there might be out there. (The exception being an iPhone 5 user, and I suspect the issue is with their settings rather than a problem my end.)

And thanks to everyone who has put forward suggestions to overcome this issue. You people are great :-)

None of the comments here has helped me. I still have a few people whose numbers turn red when attempting to message them from Messages on my Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.5. iMessage is turned on. All settings on my iPhone 4S are correct. Anyone have any more ideas?

I have a similar problem.  Messages works fine on my iPhone.  But when I try to use Messages on my iMac, more often than not I receive an error message that the addressee's phone number is not registered with Messages.  These are people in my Contacts.  This includes replying to messages in a thread that had previously worked.  I reply to an addressee with whom I had successfully texted with Messages only recently, and suddenly I see phone number "is not registered with Messages."

I had the the red error message "xxx-xxx-xxxx is not registered with iMessage" on my Mac running Messages in Yosemite. Glenn's answer (the preferred one) worked for me, but I think it could be clearer.

What solved it for me was, on my iPhone, open Settings > Messages. Turn the "iMessage" switch off. Wait a minute. Turn it back on. Wait for the status to change to "iMessages can be sent...". Your other devices/Macs signed into your iCloud account will warn you that your phone is now using iMessage. On the Mac in Messages, the red name should turn back to blue (when pointed to) and you should be able to text them via iMessage as usual.

This error doesn't really have anything to do with Text Message Forwarding, which is for text delivered via SMS phone text message, not iMessage. But changing that setting might be another way that fixes the error (think of it as jiggling the wires over at the server farm).

    I had the same issue.

    On IPhone,

    • go to Settings/Messages/Send&Receive
    • In the session 'You can be reached by iMessage at', click 'Add Another Email' (My email was missing on my phone)
    • Type in your email.

That should sync up with the Mac and Mac should recognize the phone number.  You can verify it on Mac by...

    • Open iMessage in Mac
    • go to Messages/Preferences
    • In the session 'You can be reached for messages at', you should see both phone and icloud account.

FYI:  I had to do a delete/Restore to factory to fix this.

I too did not see the options on my phone.  After reading a lot of posts here, I decided to restore my phone.  I did not use an iCloud backup, I loaded the OS fresh.  When it was done, I could see the options that folks described.

I know lots of people hate it, but loading the OS fresh may be needed.

No, I find that you can not be any clearer than those before you.  Your spelling is poor (either that, or it  is your typing that is poor), making your intent unclear.  Additionally, like most, your grammar is poor making your message unclear.  You should read, and then re-read your messages prior to sending.  Think as the recipient would when reading your message.  When composing a message on these forums, you should think after a read of your reply to someone: "Have I used all the words I can use to explain myself, or have I, like most [people] have I cut short my sentence (as I just could have with the word 'people') making your self brief but also ambiguous in the process?

How does your iPhone "show up" in iMessages?  Where is this location? I have made all the adjustments mentioned above, restarted my phone and computer, but still fail to "see" my iPhone on my Macpro.

I had the same problem.  Been using Yosemite for few months already, having no problem with Messages until 5 days ago.  I don't recall that I install or uninstall anything that day.  It is for sure a sync problem between iPhone (I use iPhone 6 with iOS 8.3) and Mac with OSx Yosemite 10.10.3, because my Mac Air which stilll have Mountain Lion OS has no problem of syncing with iPhone.  So far, I tried the TimeMachine to bring back my Mac to a month ago (I didn't have that problem a month ago), and I also tried to restore my iPhone to two weeks ago.  Nothing helps so far.  I also tried the resynchronization 3 times (shut down and sign out my iMessenger, iCloud, FaceTime on my iPhone, and sign out Messages on my Mac), each time I waited 3 hours for it to be activated, but nothing works.  Very frustrating.  I am waiting for Apple to release an update to address this problem.
