Q: Lost an item in iCloud

While composing a paper for a talk, I was interrupted by the requirement that Pages now be in iCloud. I "saved" the paper, but could not find it anywhere. I had to rush to rewrite an earlier draft saved to my desk top. When I go to iCloud, I don't find it. I am not Apple Applications savvy. How do I manage iCloud? Are there a number of things to do? I don't have any other device - not even a cell phone - so it is just for my iMac.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Just some ideas: Open Finder and look at the most recent documents to see if it is in a strange place on your Mac. Also log into iCloud.com and open Pages on the web to see if it is there (probably won't be but worth looking).

Thanks but I had already tried those two steps. No luck.

The above check off for This solved my question appeared -  sorry, but it didn't help.

There is no "requirement", you can save files wherever you want (including wherever you used to save them), the choice, as always. is yours.

All files saved to iCloud are also saved on your Mac, specifically they are in ~/library/mobile documents

Well, I couldn't find a way to get rid of the request that covered my document-in-process except to go along with it. As I said, I am a 91 year old not so savvy computer user.

As to your recommendation:  I could only find Library.new. When I went there nothing showed mobile documents. I did go to the (what called?) magnifying glass and got to mobile documents but there was nothing in there that I have created, only mostly various user's guides.

I finally learned to cope with my last OS, then upgraded to Yosemite and am having to find things all over again.

Thanks for your suggestion but this is what I could do and it did not help. Any other thoughts?

Click once on the desktop, then select the 'Go' Menu, press the option key and the library will appear, select it and go to Mobile Documents.

Or copy and paste the following path into the Go To Folder selection (also on the 'Go" menu)

    ~/library/mobile documents

Thank you. I did do this but did not see the document which I was sure I had given a title to. There is one item without a title which I tried but get the message "index.xml" is missing. I don't know what that is all about.

It would help if you gave a little more information than "I did do this"

What happened when you did it, did you find the Mobile Documents folder?

I did what you suggested. Desktop/GO menu/option key/library/Mobile Documents. What I found is as I set forth in my last message.

You don't know what you saved the document as, is that correct?

There are only about five items in there. None has the title I gave the document when working on earlier drafts. Nothing possibly related to the topic. My only thought of the possibility that I did not yet entitle the edited paper I was working on and the outside chance that the "untitled " document might be it. That is the only one I cannot open. I can open all the others.

I am sorry - I live in a retirement community and must go to supper now. I will pick up your response later. I appreciate your help.

Look in your applications folder for (a) Pages and (b) a folder called iWork 09, if the folder exists click on it and look for another copy of Pages, if it exists try to use it to open the untitled file.

    No luck.

I do thank you. It seems as if it is gone. So be it. I plan to do some trial documents saving to Cloud and see if that one situation was unique. The various ways of approaching this will be of help in the future - I am noting it all down.

Again, thank you for your help.

    Again with no information

Was the second copy of Pages present or not (this is like pulling teeth)

If you do not understand what you are doing with iCloud you will lose more things, so don't use it, you're not using mobile devices so you don't need it.

The second copy of Pages was not there.

Your advice not to use iCloud seems a good one.
