Q: Changing my Apple ID from @me.com to @icloud.com

I want to change my Apple ID from @me.com to @icloud.com - my primary/current email address has been @icloud.com for a long time now. I've never liked or related to @me.com but @mac.com had been withdrawn at the time of original set-up and I had to have @me.com. I was constantly being asked by people "What is @me?" I'm also confusing my 3 Apple devices when trying to sync iMessages.

However, try as I might, I cannot get rid of @me.com as my Apple ID - I've gone through the official procedures to do this and nothing works. I should be allowed to change it - after all, the ID belongs to me (pardon the pun).

Am I saddled with @me.com for ever now?

Thanks, Kathleen

Your Apple  ID and email are two separate items. Your Apple ID does not have to be an Apple email address. I know it's confusing.

Please, verify that you logged into Manage your Apple ID https://appleid.apple.com to reset your email address for your Apple  ID.

If yes, I suspect the reason it's not changing is Apple  sees @me, @mac, @icloud as the same email address.

Another option would be to use a different email like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com, AOL etc as your Apple  ID.

However, if it's your email that is defaulting to @me.com, we can easily change that in Apple Mail.

    Hi Kathleen,

    No you aren't.

I think there's a simple answer to your problem. Both @iCloud.com and @Me.com are interchangeable for email and logins.

I had the same complaint and came from @Mac.com as well. You can easily test this out for yourself by sending an email to yourself using your Kathleen@Me.com address by substituting Kathleen@iCloud.com instead.

As far as I know you will always see your @Me.com name when logging into various Apple services but by using iCloud.com ID to login you still get to the same account.

I don't recall anything needed to be done before hand for this, however there was an option when the last change took place and you could give yourself a new iCloud.com address when you first signed in from a Phone of iPad I think.

Hope that helps, if not let me know.

    Ross/.

There are problems with creating a new Apple ID. Anything you purchased in iTunes or at the App Store using the Apple ID @me.com will not transfer to the Apple ID @iCloud.com, so you end up using 2 Apple IDs. If you are willing to accept that, create a new ID.

From an email point of view you will be able to get emails via name@mac.com name@me.com and name@icloud.com and be able to send as well. However my own experience is that some Apple systems will let you login just using name e.g. www.icloud.com and it will automatically assume this is name@icloud.com others will not let you login using just name or name@icloud.com and insist on using whatever was the original format when you joined e.g. name@mac.com

Unfortunately this 'primary' address cannot be changed, for example when I try logging in to my iCloud account on my iPhone it insists on using name@mac.com

See iCloud: About your @icloud.com, @me.com, and @mac.com email addresses - Apple Support

Thank you to all who took the trouble to respond to me on this issue. Yes, I did find each response helpful and confirmed to me that, in the scheme of things, this irritation is fairly minor.  Funnily enough, when logging into this forum just now I was asked for my Apple ID and ....@icloud.com was accepted, no trouble.
