Q: FaceTime call will not rotate to landscape on Apple TV

I have been using FaceTime and AirPlay mirroring to put FaceTime calls on my living room TV via Apple TV for over 2 years.  After the recent upgrade to iOS 8 and Apple TV the orientation is incorrect.  I turn my iPhone to landscape orientation, but the video shows on the TV in portrait orientation, and the video is rotated 90 degrees.  I believe this to be a bug in either the AppleTV update or iOS 8.  Anyone else have this issue?

iPhone 5, iOS 8.1

Officially giving up. iOS 8.3 and Apple TV OS7.2 update didn't solve it either.

It is shocking by any means..

Was ios 8.3 released and I missed it? Or, are you a developer or beta tester with access to ios 8.3? I'm on ios 8.2 and I'm still having the same issue.

I hadn't noticed. Thanks. It ***** to hear that Apple missed another opportunity to fix this problem and others.

I just spoke to one of the Apple's tech support representatives today. Apparently, Apple was not aware of this bug and he is bringing this issue to Apple's Engineering team. Let us hope they will have this problem fixed soon.

I too am giving up on Apple to fix this problem. I remember when this feature worked flawlessly. I used to call my daughter on my iPhone and went to landscape ant it would fill the screen with Apple TV.  Those days are gone! Now when you do get landscape to work it is a lame tiny picture in the middle of the Apple TV screen. Come on Apple fix this!

I've found out what the problem is, but it's up to Apple to fix it, FaceTime doesn't truly rotate, it only rotates the camera and video, and doesn't change the aspect ratio of the device to landscape.

Looks as if iOS 9 did not solve the issue either. I'm so disappointed. Could they be doing this intentionally? For what purpose?

I have encountered this problem since ios 8 a year ago. I submited multiple feedbacks to Apple, hoping Apple will fix this simple bug in the next update. I have been patiently waiting this fix in each update for the past year but to no avail. This issue is not even in iOS 9.0.2 released yesterday. Really disappointed. Bad Apple!

The only workaround is to use Airplay Mirroring in iPad, instead of iPhone.

I am very disappointed, too. As someone mentioned before the iphone screen doesn't truly rotate when facetiming landscape mode, only the camera and buttons do. Apple is doing this clearly on purpose but are they not aware that it effects facetime mirroring on Apple Tv..

Perhaps we need to keep this forum busy so someone from apple takes notice..

    shame..

+1 to keeping this thread going! I was hoping to find the solution listed here. It's frustrating that Apple still hasn't resolved landscape rotation - especially since it used to work!! It's not like ATV4 has a camera built-in either. Though you think they will in the future?

@gunay, what does tech support say in the most recent times you've submitted feedback? I'm getting a pair of tellymount for my mom and me, so I hope full screen will be ready by the time they ship.

I'm also experiencing this problem with my new Apple TV 4 and my new iPhone 6S. Makes no sense that the output does not rotate on the TV, since it does rotate (on both ends of the conversation) when we're just using iOS devices…

    Same problem here.

Yesterday I bought the Apple TV 4th generation (32 GB), I´m using it with the iPhone 6 s.

I called my parents (they use iMac) but no landscape mode available for Facetime, if I rotate the iPhone to landscape mode, they see me correctly in full screen, but they appear on my screen vertically. It just doesn´t rotate to landscape mode.

I don´t have problems with other apps, like watching photos or videos saved in my iPhone, they are displayed in full screen (landscape mode).

When making the call, I mirrored (duplicate) iPhone´s content. Am I missing something?

This morning, Apple TV installed an update but I didn´t have time to check if they fixed this bug. I´ll try it this evening and if they fixed it, I´ll post it here.
