I have the same pop up and it will not let me out of it.  I can force quit safari but it always comes back up...

Did you follow all of the instructions in Kappy's second posting? Perhaps these instructions will help A Browser Pop-up has Taken Over Safari

I know this post overall is old but I have had this and one that says the FBI has locked my computer. I think everyone should know the one fix I have found that works to fix this problem.  I just want future people to be able to see this fix.

    1st Force quit safari

2nd turn off your internet on your mac

3rd now reopen safari, you will get the message saying cannot connect to server

Now you can close out all of the tabs and turn the internet back on and use safari again

If you're going to disconnect from the Internet, you don't need to force quit Safari. With no way to talk to the remote server, it can't prevent you from backing out of the page, or closing the offending tab.

Holding "shift" and removing website data worked for me. Thank you! I wish I had taken a screenshot of my popup. It was bigger than the ones above and had Norton Antivirus in the background informing me of a trojan and other crap. Also wanted me to call the toll free number saying it is extremely urgent and my computer is at risk. Thank you, again, for the solution.

Please Do not call on the Number.  Better Follow these instructions.

Go to apple(Top Left Of screen) -> Force Quit->  Select Safari or Chrome-> Force Quit->Close the force quit window-

Hold down the Shift From keyboard and open Safari or Chrome the pop up will go away.

    thanks

Although your advise is correct the problem happened eight months ago and the OP received identical advise at the time from others. It's pretty much a waste of you time to reply to such an old discussion, especially when I'm sure there are several others just like it that occurred today.

I had a similar message and experience and although suspicious made the call. The Tech on the other end sounded legit. He had me force quit Safari and restart the program with the shift key down. Then we were immediately disconnected after which I quit the program. I have not been back on Safari using that device. I did try to open iTunes which warned me that it did not recognize the server address. Since then I've bee trying to research what to do next.

As long as you did not grant him direct access to your computer, then nothing bad could have happened to your Mac. Just continue to use it as you have previously and if you are having other issues don't hesitate to post a new discussion topic to have it resolved.

PERFECT solution!  Always good to know you can "safe start" Safari like this too!  Great information.
