Q: Not responding processes in Actvity Monitor: callservicesd, coreaudiod, com.apple.geod, identityservicesd, and icloud helper

whenever I open Activity Monitor in Yosemite release version, there are three services that are maked red as not responding. They are callservicesd, coreaudiod, and com.apple.geod, icloud helper, and identityservicesd. I have yosemite on my system. It has been upgraded from Mavericks 10.9.5

calling from Mac via iPhone to another phone work fine. I can also log in to iCloud from System Preferences and manage my account. No other malfunction seen other than these not responding services in Activity Monitor

What are they? And what go wrong?

I have just filed BR and this problem is also reported here http://www.drwingnut.info/?p=13805

Any comment and fis please

These instructions are good for what ever plugin you are using.

Solution for heavy RAM usage and non-responding services

    1. Find Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin in the following path : /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL
    2. Delete the plug-in and remove it from the trash.
    3. Reboot the system.

I didn't have a Digidesign CoreAudio plugin.. but I DID have a program called "Hear" installed.

    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/hear.php

After uninstalling and restarting the computer coreaudiod was no longer in a "stopped responding" state.

com.apple.geod does not depend on WiFi being on or off.

No this isnt true at all.

At home and at work when I have a VERY good wi-fi connect, geod is ALWAYS saying it's Not responding.

I also found the 'avid.coreaudio.plugin' to be the problem. Once I removed that and restarted, I was 'A' for away. I have not had a hanging proccess in the last 5 days, including multiple restarts and pro longed use of my Macbook Pro...

I also did a manual uninstall of Pro Tools 10 which was still installed, as the un/installer does not work on 10.10 Yosemite. There is an Avid forum for this...just google it - "Manual uninstall Pro Tools 10", should be the first hit.

I also installed soundflower, as a precaution. I reinstalled it after the second restart where everything was still working. It has yet to cause any issues.

I think it is safe to say that this particular problem comes from an audio driver or plugin, which has become incompatible.

Thanks for the advice guys. I hope you have all managed to sort out your issues.

    Thank you Rappeace.

This was driving me crazy. After deleting Hear.plugin and Hear program—that I even don't remember when I installed it—the problem was solved. No more red, non-responding processes in Activity monitor any more so far. It seems that this app is not compatible with Yosemite.

OK. After much observation and discussion with a random collection of other part-time Mac Developers, I have come up with the following information:

1- The issue of "Not Responding" processes can happen to ANY process.

Just Recently, I have had it occur with both Mail and "softwareupdated" as well as the infamous "geod."

2- The problem is clearly a product of Yosemite (I'm running 10.10.1) -- what is unclear is WHICH part of Yosemite is the cause.

i.e. it did not happen prior to  Yosemite. (Out of date - not verified to run on Yosemite - 3rd-party software is a separate problem.

         EtreCheck can help spot them.)

3- The trigger appears to be "ANY connectivity issue."  If an application (any program or OSX Daemon) is running when a communications "glitch" occurs,

there is a 50-50 chance that application will become "Not Responding."

4- In Unix(tm) terminology, that application has become "wedged." -- it is waiting for some response from something, which will never happen,

eventually it will show up in Activity Monitor as "Not Responding."

5- If you look at the "info" -- the "I" button at the top left of Activity Monitor for any non-responding process, you will discover that the "Recent hangs"

count is always greater than zero.

6- You can always use the "X" button in Activity Monitor to Force Quit the "Not Responding" process.

7- So far we have found nothing which reliably prevents a "Non Responding" process from happening.

The potential causes appear to be many and varied. Any given "fix" will seem to work for a period of time and then fail again -- especially with "geod."

8- A number of bugs exist which "might" impact this problem. We won't know until 10.10.2 (or later) is released if such "Not Responding" processes simply "go away." In other words, in the short run, at least, this is an issue we will simply have to live with.

Thanks, for the synopsis, William. I concur.

I did the 10.10.2 upgrade the other day and still see com.apple.geod not responding on a regular basis.

hey rappeace, what interface are you using? i have a digi 002r and have removed both the Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin file and the DigiDioMidiDriver.plugin file. the coreaudio daemon is no longer in the "not responding" state, however i have yet to test my interface (im not near my studio at the moment so will test this weekend). was wondering if your interface still works after removing the Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin file. btw, i do not have PT installed. just using the interface foe Logic/Ableton.

I have the same problem on an early 2014 MacBook Air on 10.10.2. I find that I have to sleep the machine for several hours to get the error. Then I see com.apple.geod not responding. I can kill that process, but then I start having multiple other processes stop responding, often office 2011. I'm seeing a similar problem on my wife's MacBook Pro Retina late 2013. Do you guys think the cascade of app crashes is related to this other set of errors? These are my first macs and so far they have been rather unstable requiring full restarts at least once per use. I've never had these problems with my windows PCs and in fact my Win 8 bootcamp partition is very stable on my MacBook Air. Maybe I have non-compatible 3rd party software, but these non responding apps seem to have started around the time of the Yosemite upgrade. I'm hoping they fix this, I like the computers/OS otherwise. Otherwise has anyone wiped their machine and reinstalled and found any success? Thanks.

I'm having the same issues on my MacMini late 2012 running Yosemite. I have all the audio fuzz installed on it as well...

I do NOT have the issue on my Late 2013 Macbook Pro also running Yosemite. No audio software on that one!

Ok, I was really annoyed by those non-reactive tasks so I went in and manually uninstalled ProTools 10 according to this description: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/how_to/Uninstall-Pro-Tools-Mavericks

Then I also uninstalled Pro Tools 11 by just moving the application file into the trash.

Then I downloaded the most current version of Pro Tools 11 and installed it.

I also reset my PRAM and SMC according to this: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/reset-macs-smc-pram/(not directly related, I was cleaning up some other stuff as well)

So far it seems to be working on my MacMini loaded with Yosemite.

P.S. I read somewhere that you can't have PT10 and 11 on the same machine. Which was the case for me.

Also works on my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro after carefully uninstalling PT10.

I had the same problem. I fixed it by deleting "soundbunny.plugin" in the HAL folder (Macintosh HD > Library >Audio>Plug-ins>HAL). If you need SoundBunny I hear that there is a new version compatible with Yosemite. Good luck.

I had the same issue.. com.apple.goed(not responding), I was really tired with this "freaking issue".

I just opened "/Users/muhammadfarooqi/Library/Containers/" and deleted that folder "com.apple.goed". It's totally a user based library. I'm sure it' doesn't effect any of the system file. Now I have nothing "not responding"

I haven't restarted yet. I'm sure it will not appear again.
