Q: lost photos after OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 update

I just completed the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 updates.  I lost all photos not associated with iCloud.  Any suggestions on how to restore/find them?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Ok.  So...the update doesn't change iPhoto to Photos.  It creates a full new program.  While I had iPhoto in my toolbar at the bottom of my screen, the update removed the iPhoto app from the toolbar and replaced it with Photos.  Usually when this happens, a program is updated and the app just looks a little different, but it is the same program.  This was not the case with this update.  If I go to the iPhoto album saved under Pictures folder, it opens the new Photos app.  I am also unable to visually see the iPhoto app under Launchpad; however, it is still there and all my pictures are still there.  If anyone else has this problem, you simply have to go to Launchpad and search for iPhoto in the search bar at the top of the screen.  Once you find it, add it back to the toolbar and open it up.  Everything should be there.

    If you check in the ~/pictures folder (Select finder, menu bar select Go > Home. Open pictures folder) do you have an iPhoto Library file? If not there was the iPhoto library located in an alternate location?  When found whats the size of your iPhoto library file?

    Says the size is 1.27 gb.  If I select "Go to folder" and enter "Home".  It says it doesn't exist.

    Enable all standard folders to show in your sidebar. You can do that in the Finder Preferences.

    • Click somewhere onto the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
    • Then go to the main menu bar: Finder > Preferences.
    • In the Preferences panel click "Sidebar" and enable the Pictures folder (and any other items you want tons ee in the Favorites).

    I know where my Pictures folder is and where to access it.  I know where iPhoto is located.  When I did the update and opened iPhoto, all of the videos and photos that I had manually uploaded via cameras/SD Cards prior to the update where gone.  Any photos linked from my phone to iCloud are still there.

    Hi, I'm having a similar problem. I just updated to 10.10.3 and photos appeared. I understand it's a different program, but when I go to finder - home - pictures I have no iPhoto folder. When I try to open the iPhoto app it won't allow me to unless I update from the app store. Then, when I try to do that, it tells me that the iPhoto app is currently not available in the iPhoto store. HAAAALP! I have back ups, so worst case is I back up to a previous version Any ideas? Thanks

    Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

     

    If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

     

    Install the App from the App Store.

    Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

     

    iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

    Thanks Terence for the reply. When I go to the app store I can see iPhoto, but it will not open when I click "open". I assume this is related to the "not available in the australian store" message I was getting yesterday. I think reinstalling a previous back up will have to be the solution unless you have any other ideas? Cheers

    That is because Apple stopped selling iPhoto.

    You can no longer buy iPhoto from the App Store anywhere, and also not update it from the "Updates" tab of the App Store. You can however reinstall it, if it is showing among your Purchases at the App Store and associated with your AppleID.

    Sign into the App Store and look at the Purchases tab.

    Reinstall as described in this User Tip: (essentially what TD described in the answer to you)

     

    Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

     

    The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

     

    So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.

     

     

    If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:   Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

    Where are you seeing iPhoto at the AppStore? Is it on your Purchases tab or not?

    If the iPhoto version you have installed is any version of iPhoto '11,version 9.x.x, but it does not show on the Purchases page  at the App Store, contact the Mac AppStore Support. There is a "contact us" link among the Quick Links on the main AppStore page.

    If you had iPhoto 8.x.x., there is no chance to update, because the upgrade from 8.x.x. to 9.x. is a paid upgrade, and Apple does no longer sell iPhoto.

    This helped me! I have never used iPhoto and just navigated to my pictures in their organized folders through Finder.

    Going through the menu and clicking Go, then Home, got me to the right spot to find the folder again.

    Just something to share with everyone.. I just about freaked out when I came around to look at my photos in iPhoto. I clicked iPhoto and a window popped up saying, "The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store." When I clicked, "Search App Store"; another window pops up saying, "Item Not Available. The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store." I tried not to panic, but Most people will. I went back to the apple website looked up IOS Yosemite and re-read about Photos. That's when I realized I needed to Launch Photos. Just click "Photos" in the tool bar and then click, "Get Started" and it will get all your photos from "iPhoto Library" and transfer them to "Photo's" automatically. This took forever, since I have thousands of photos. But they're All there! I definitely learned a lesson. I believe this is Apples way of saying Use iCloud or else! I just don't like storing my valuables in any Cloud or Picasa etc. Sorry Apple. But I will take out the dusty box with my External Hard Drive and Back up everything more often. Hope this helps the not so techies out there.
