Q: Messages App Won't Open

So, I got the new OS X update (Version 10.10.3) and the OS X Yosemite Recovery Update (Version 1.0) for my MacBook Air yesterday, and ever since, I can't seem to open the Messages on the laptop. I'll click the Messages icon, and it just doesn't respond to opening. (You know how the app will usually jump up and down to show that it's about to open. The Messages icon doesn't do that anymore.) All of the other apps are working properly, except for the Messages one. I tried removing the files from the Messages folder, and that worked a little bit, but it erased previous messages that I had. Also, I opened the MacBook again today, and the app stopped opening again, and it shows that the files are in the folder again.

Can someone please help me with this? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have set the exception on both these screens

Hi,

Does it launch from the Applications Folder ?

It does not. What's worse is that when I try to open it, my whole laptop starts to hang and lag, which forces me to hold down the power button to reboot it.

Hi

I'm currently having the exact same issue with messages. This has only happened since the update to 10.10.3

I have a case logged with a senior advisor at Apple Care. I'll let you know what they say.

Just spoke to Apple care.

They have tried reseting my disk permissions which hasn't helped and now want me to perform a reinstall of the OS.

If anyone has any further advice I'd really appreciate it as I don't really want to reinstall. Everything else is working fine apart from Messages.

Are you using McAfee as virus protection?

This appears to be causing some kind of conflict with the messages app.

If you are set messages as an exclusion in McAfee Application Protection. I've done this after reading about it in another post and the problem (appears) to be resolved. Messages opens straight away and no system hangs.

I am using McAfee. I'll try to set Messages as an exclusion there. McAfee is starting to hang for me when I try to set the exclusion though.

McAfee is still hanging when I try to put Messages as an exclusion. I managed to get Messages open, and what I'm doing now is just keeping it open, and it's working fine. If I were to close it and then open it again, it will lag and hang a lot until eventually opening.

Hi,

Those pics are from the McAfee Anitvirus protection app.
At the time of the Start of this Thread the app had not been updated to allow Messages to work after the update around the same time.
