In the Testdisk output, the list you have is for unrecoverable partitions. Press Enter/Return to Continue. You will get a final list of recoverable partitions.

Do not use left right arrow keys anywhere in Testdisk. You are looking for MS Data entries with Start addresses in the the following range

    880585424   57457968

Use 'P - List Files' to look for familiar Windows files. You are looking for a listing similar to the following.

the only one starting higher than 880585424 that contained anything of note was the following:

         MS Data                938043392  977104895   39061504 [04]

I accidentally quit in TestDisk so it now reanalysing!

With the two numbers you gave as a range, did you mean between 57457968 to 880585424?

The first number is start the second is the size of the gap. The gap is boot important. The entry that you are looking at in the previous post is the same same as your current GPT4, which does not work.

I have been following the TestDisk screenshots. When i get to the screen (text pasted below) the numbers are not exactly the same as teh ones you posted, is this a problem?

    Disk /dev/rdisk0 - 500 GB / 465 GiB - 977105060 sectors (RO)

If i keep hitting ENTER as the screenshots suggest when i get to the end of the Deeper Search, i get the very very long list of numbers but again, none of them are exactly the same as the ones you posted. Of that very long list, the part where the numbers were closest to starting at teh number you suggested were this:

I am somewhat confused as i must be missing something here. Are you able to help?

Do you think this issue is caused by the Yosemite upgrade?

Will it be easier to wipe everything and start again? I have Time Capsule back ups but am concerned that Time Capsule will bring the same problems with it anyway.

    Appreciate your time, thanks.

My screen shot is an example. Each disk will have unique numbers.

This seems to be the correct candidate. Here is a table with numbers specific to your case.

GPT 3 StartGPT 3 SizeGPT 3 EndNTFS StartSector OffsetNTFS SizeNTFS EndSector Offset (MB)
    8793158881269536880585424880586752132896518137977104889 1

Here are two sets of steps that you need to execute. Leave your Testdisk display and start a new Terminal Window. Please use the following steps.

If you see any error messages during the following steps, please stop and post back here with the error message. The following steps have values from your Testdisk output (and you can verify) in Steps 7 and 8.

    Rebuild GPT4 using start/end offsets

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (print the full list of parts)
    3. D  (delete)
    4. 4  (part 4)
    5. N  (new part)
    6. 4   (part 4)
    7. 880586752 - Start offset in bytes  (start point for Bootcamp part)
    8. +96518137 (Size offset as opposed to End offset. Please ensure you use the '+' sign)
    9. 0700     (Windows part type)
    10. P           (print list of all parts just to see what changes will be made)
    11. W         (Write the new GPT)
    12. Y           (Yes! really write the new GPT)

This will delete and re-write the GPT partition info for /dev/disk0s4.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 6. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R   (Recover)
    4. H (chooses Hybrid)
    5. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3 4
    6. Y (Good for GRUB question)
    7. N (part 2 boot flag)
    8. N (part 3 boot flag)
    9. Y  (part 4 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    10. W  (Write the new MBR)
    11. Y    (Yes! write the new MBR)
    12. Reboot

This is sample Q&A for these steps. Please notice Press Enter/Return in questions where you should accept the default offered by Gdisk.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AB): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #4 (MBR partition #4)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): 07

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

i followed the steps but my answers to Test 1-3 are no.

    So step by step check:

    when entering

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

    i get the following screen:

    when rerunning the

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

command. i notice that at Step 7 the Default number is not

    880586752

    but is 880585424

    is that an issue?

i re-ran all the steps. no new error messages but still answer 'no' to the 3 questions.

However, while i do NOT see Bootcamp in StartUp Disk, I can see it in Disk Utility (previously it showed up as '04') however it is greyed out and 'unmountable'.

    Is this significant?

Were you able to verify that you could see valid files using 'P - List files' in the following MS Data entry?

    D MS Data 880586752  977104888   96518137

Rebuild GPT4 set of steps should be down first, because the MBR is derived from the values. If you notice there is a gap between GPT3 End and NTFS Start (of 1328 sectors), which is used for boundary alignment.

The GPT3 End and NTFS Start are different and they are 880585424 and 880586752 respectively.

If you run the following two commands,

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

They should be aligned completely. If you want, post the output of the two commands and I can verify.

If you rebuilt the GPT4 after the Hybrid MBR steps were executed, it will not work. Third-party NTFS software will also interfere with the visibility of Windows partition in System Preferences -> Startup Disk.

Although i posted the screenshots in reverse order I did follow the steps in the way you suggested.

I am unsure what the implications of "Third-party NTFS software will also interfere with the visibility of Windows partition in System Preferences -> Startup Disk." are, and what third-party NTFS software could be. Is there a way to check?
