Q: Kernel_Task Need Help

My computer has been extremely slow lately and the Kernel_Task has been using up a lot of CPU lately. I don't know much about how to fix this stuff so if someone could take a look at my EtreCheck (someone said to do that on another forum and start a new thread) and give me some advice that would be greatly appreciated. You do not need a 3rd party anti-malware product.  It is redundant to what Mac OS X provides standard, plus it consumes resources better used for the stuff you really want to run.  And kernel extension are running as part of kernel_task (which is the guts of Mac OS X).

Considering your system has been up for about 26 days, the ratio of page-ins to page-outs reinforces etresoft's contention that you need more RAM.  You are getting the high page-ins because Mac OS X is throwing away read only memory (mostly program code) because it is easy, and then having to page it back in to memory when it is needed again.  Also the high number of killed Apple daemons, which is another way Yosemite frees up space.

 

Google Chrome can be very memory intensive.  It runs a separate process for each Tab, so no single process looks like it is consuming a lot of RAM, but if you have a lot of Tabs open, there are a lot of processes consuming a lot of RAM.

 

Having an SSD with enough RAM will really make your Mac fly.  I have a 15" 2011 with 16GB RAM and an SSD, and it great.  Suggest Crucial.comhttp://crucial.com or MacSales.com (OWC) as reliable Mac RAM vendors.

This sounds like a Mac Cleaner.  Mac cleaners tend to fight Yosemite.  If this module is doing a lot of disk I/O it would cause the file system in kernel_task to consume a lot of CPU time, and since you have a SSD, there would be very little I/O wait when doing I/O.

 

Unless you absolutely need some service this component is providing, I would suggest removing it, at least until you know for a fact it is not causing problems.

Not sure what this is doing.  Do you need it?


The less stuff you pre-load into Memory, the further your 4GB can stretch.

    That is part of Trim Enabler. Don't try to go looking for these files. Only use a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never use an "app zapper". Never try to delete files by hand. The results can be disastrous.

    Yea, remembering you are using an SSD, then Cindori makes TRIM Enabler, HOWEVER, you have to disable a lot of Mac OS X security features before you can run TRIM Enabler in Yosemite.  If you have not done that, then on Yosemite TRIM Enabler does not run.

     

    Speaking of Yosemite.  You posted this in the Mountain Lion forum   I'm going to ask the hosts to move the posts to the Yosemite Forum.

    None of these questions answer the problem. This is being re-bumped.

     

    I have the exact same issue. I have replaced the battery. Run and SMC reset. Tested in Mavericks, Yosemite, and now El Capitan. All three times I had zero installed but the base operating system. I have 16 Gbytes of RAM. I have a brand new Samsung EVO 850.

     

    Each time, it seems ok then a reboot or two and my kernel_task is hovering near 300%. I am also noticing if I go on to battery then it kernel_task jumps up. Plug it back in and it will remain high. Nothing in the log shows anything relevant to kernel_task.

     

    I thought replacing the battery would fix this issue. I have replaced the RAM. I replaced the drive. This has been beyond frustrating. At this point I am desperate because Apple will not likely fix this with a depot repair. It also appears to be quite common in the MBPro 8,2 Early 2011 model.

    Everything checks out fine except for this:

    That is the only alert. I have no clue what that is and I thought I knew most about the underpinnings. Also my CPU will never go past 0.8ghz. I ran the Intel power gadget, cleaned out the innards, replaced the ram, etc. Even turned up the RPM on the fan to 6000. Got the mac nice and cool. Still stays at 0.8. Flat lined.
