Q: Serial number is not available / charger not working / battery won't turn on

Basically, I have two problems.

The first is that my laptop will not turn on.

  • I have a white plastic macbook from 2010 and it has been gradually getting slower and slower all the time, which is fine, it's a good 5 years old now.
  • recently the battery would no longer charge, but the laptop had about 2% left and worked as long as I left it plugged in. I had decided to take it in to an Apple store, but hadn't made any actions regarding this decision, as I am very busy, and I figured it could wait a week or two
  • I just replaced the charger in July, so I sincerely doubt that is the problem
  • the charger is currently plugged in to the laptop and the well and glows a faint green (as it did previously when the laptop was not charging but running on external power) but the laptop will not start at all, the white light along the front doesn't even come on, the hard drive does not spin, nothing
  • it might be a contributing factor that I am from Canada and I have been living in the UK for the year, and it has been used with a converter a lot? Just a thought.

So I wanted to get support from Apple, I logged on to the site, and was asked or a serial number in order to make an appointment

  • I no longer have the original packaging or receipt - it's back in Canada
  • as was aforementioned, the laptop will not turn on so I can't get it that way
  • I had the casing replaced a few years ago due to external cracking so it is not on the outside of the case

How to find the serial number of your Apple hardware product

Do you have your Snow Leopard installer discs with you? If so, then try this:

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc

    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.

      2. Restart the computer.

      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.

      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple

          logo appears.

      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions

After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Proceed to reinstall Snow Leopard (do not erase the drive) over your existing OS X system provided it is a Snow Leopard system. If you have upgraded to Lion or later, then you must do something different.

Try to locate the serial number via these directions:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1366

You will have to open the Macbook.

    Ciao.

That is not helpful because even if I did have the discs with me - which I don't - the computer literally will not turn on.
