Q: Problems using 'Back to my Mac' with Yosemite

At home I have two Macs, an iMac and a MacBook, both running Mavericks. At work I use a MacBook Pro, also running Mavericks, and when I'm out I use a MacBook Air that was running developer preview of Yosemite.

My home iMac has now been upgraded to Yosemite. However when at work using my Mavericks MacBook I can no longer use 'Back to my Mac' to screen share back to my iMac, I get "Connection failed to "Conor's iMac", but I can still connect to the MacBook at home running Mavericks. I've also tried connecting to both Macs at home using my Yosemite MacBook Air but I get the same error.

I can screen share between all Mac when they are on the local network, but as soon as I'm using iCloud to screen share the only connection I can make is between Macs running Mavericks. It's almost as if 'Back to my Mac' via iCloud is broken in Yosemite.

I've tried disabling and reenabling 'Back to my Mac', signing out of iCloud entirely and then logging in again, but nothing I've tried so far will allow me to use iCloud to screen share between two Yosemite Macs.

Has anyone else seen this issue, or have any suggestions?

    Here's something to explore:

Try to start a remote connection using terminal per this article.

See if you can connect. I have discovered that I can make an ssh connection via this route, even when screen sharing or a finder connection is unavailable.

The bottom line I have seemed to discern is there is no way for a user to 'fix' this issue, it's just plain flakey.

    Update:

It seems to be working just fine now. Perhaps it has to do with some caching issue, such that using it more frequently makes it work more consistently? Or, as I have always suspected, some part of the Apple system is endowed with real life . . .

    That can't be it.

I'm sure they'll fix it... eventually. They did with every other OS X release, but it wasn't completely reliable until OS X 10.x point three or four. That will give us a good three or four months of BTMM until OS X 10.11.

Cringely : “What does it mean when you tell someone their work is s**t?”

M.Jobs : "Uh, it usually means their work is s**t. (...)"

    He is missed...

Oh, and after almost a year, the issue still isn't fixed.

Either pull the plug on it or make it work already.

BTMM seems to be working for the first time for me over the WAN with three Macs all upgraded to 10.10.3 in two different states. The other Macs now show up in shared, and I have been able to log in to both remote machines. So... this is looking much better from my perspective so far.

Wish i could say the same. I'm sitting at work right now and I can't see any of my home machines (all running 10.10.3)

Oddly enough, this is the first Yosemite update in which that I am unable to screen or file share even with Macs on the same LAN, and forget about WAN.

The other Macs now appear in "Shared" all the time, but connection attempts fail.

I have managed to make it work. ...In my particular case.

I usually want to connect from my MBpro to my iMac and my Mini Server when I'm away.

So to test it out and troubleshoot I made my iPhone a "Personal Hotspot" ("Partage de connexion") at home. That way I could physically access all of my machines while my MBpro was connected through WAN.

The Yosemite update seemed to have deactivated BTMM on my MBpro (or was it ever activated ? - I have never used it to access my laptop, so there was no need.). As well, nothing is checked in the sharing panel on my MacBook Pro.

Then on all of my other machines I unchecked BTMM in iCloud prefs. Closed Preferences re-opened them and re-checked BTMM. And that seems to work.

In conclusion : Make sure every machine has BTMM turned on. Reset BTMM's Preference in System Prefs.

That's what has worked for me.

That being said, we are very far from the concept of a one button remote here. :/

Yes but will it work tomorrow!

I can get BTMM to work but not consistently and reliably.

It needs to work when there is no one on hand to reset/restart the remote host.

Updated all my Macs to 10.10.3 and BTMM still not working. Completely agree with you is not consistently, most of the times doesn't work and sporadically you get the connection.

Come on Apple......should be not so difficult (6 months waiting to solve this problem)

after 10.10.3, BTMM has been working consistently for me.  It now even finally wakes my MBP from sleep.

    Hi vegeta777

Lucky you! I've upgraded to 10.10.3 and have been carrying out tests throughout today on a sleeping Mac Mini and it either doesn't show in the sidebar or it shows but does not connect.

My router is an 802.11ac Time Capsule to which my Mac Mini is connected by ethernet. I use the guest network on the Time Capsule for testing connectivity from my MacBook. So I'm all Apple but still can't get BTMM to work unless I toggle the iCloud Setting for BTMM on my Mac Mini.

Tomorrow I will carry out the same tests after changing my Energy Saving Settings to prevent the Mac Mini from sleeping automatically.

What is your configuration as a matter of interest?

    Thanks

I have two MPB's connected to Airport Time Capsules, one via ethernet (both in Bridge Mode), both MB's on 10.10.3

UPnP is activated on both routers (Verizon DSL and FiOS)
