Q: iOS 8.1 - Keyboard Shortcuts: Restores Previously Deleted Keyboard Shortcuts

At random times when I go into the Keyboard Settings on my Mac (Yosemite) or iPhone (iOS 8.1) the Keyboard Shortcuts I have deleted since iOS 7 keep coming back and syncing between my iPhone and Mac. Just yesterday I deleted them from 8.1 and Yosemite but today they are back. I deleted all of the ones on my Mac but those changes don't sync over to my iPhone.

There should be a way to disable keyboard shortcuts and fix this bug.

    This worked for me:

    1. Delete all your shortcuts

    2. Create a new, simple one. (in my case, I created a shortcut for "on my way" to be "omw")

    3. Save the new shortcut

    4. By now, you should only have one shortcut in your list

    5. Restart your iPhone (normal restart)

    6. When your phone is back on, check the shortcuts again. There should only be one shortcut there (which is the "omw" I created previously)

@Clad7 Give it several days, the shortcuts will come back. I have tried dozens and dozens of these permutations to try and fool the iOS bug.The unwanted shortcuts always come back - its only a matter of time.

@Jsai Joe this does not work. The shortcuts come back within a day or two. Folks, lets stop posting potential workaround solutions until they are have run for at least 3 days.

I thought it was fixed and they came back again. I updated to iOS8.3 Guess what THEY ARE BACK AGAIN!

#AppleSucks Now the keyboard actually is worse than ever. If you try to use a 3rd party keyboard it just goes crazy... Typing random uppercase letters, etc.

I'm totally sick of Apple now for sure. I surely thought this would have fixed it. NOT!!!

More issues with the keyboard after the update 8.3... Went to the Apple store today and they replaced my iPad. Came home to spend about an hour with customer support, because now I can not create a shortcut at all. Finally after a reboot or two I was allowed to create a shortcut again. Let's see what the next few days hold. They told me that they are pretty sure it's software related so even with a new device it could happen again! I'm still in shock that this is Apple I'm dealing with. I feel like I'm in Windows land again! :-(

I've had had some great support people today. Thanks to Bill K., David N., and Brent C. at the downtown San Francisco Apple Store and for Anna at the AppleCare+ call center.

They are having a senior tech person call me tomorrow to discuss the keyboard and shortcut issues. Hang in there, maybe this time someone will really listen! We can only hope!

This has been happening since Apple removed the option to sync 'documents and settings' to iCloud. Apple, can we have a solution to this soon? Still not fixed in 8.3.

Has anyone been able to get this fixed??!! Idk how many times I've deleted and they keep reappearing. I've deleted, back up iCloud, and it comes back after a few days.

i Even deleted, ccreated new iCloud, back up.. COMES BACK!!! even with a new iCloud account!

i also went in and edit the old codes by adding zzzz's before them (so I won't accidentally type them) .. Guess what happened? My old codes came back!!!!! So the 50 Codes I jjust added z's to them are there and now I have 50 more of the original old codes BACK!! so my little fingers are having to swipe twice as much to delete.    so frustrating. Now i am going to have to just factory reset. And see..so irritating!!!

the answer is very simple, this is how :

    1. Delete the unwanted shortcut

    2. Change your current keyboard to another keyboard that provided  by apple, in case my self, from English to English (UK)

Now you can restart or hard restart the iphone as many as you like and the unwanted shorcut wont back, i have tried this for a month, and everthing is fine, but i wonder if you are using specific alphabetic keyboard like chinese or thailand, well i dont know what to do, since it just has one keyboard, i hope it helps you all, cheers

OH man Maxindo you told them! After about 30 hours of reading and fiddling I too found that solution. But I refused to post it. I refused to do Apples work for them. Why the F are we the ones tracking the bug down????? Your software guys should be fired Apple. Well over a year and no solution (other than what "WE" have come up with). Embarrassing.

So yes, the bug is tied to the keyboard. Delete the shortcuts on all devices and delete the default keyboard and use English (Canada) or UK. Or you can use a custom one via an app. I can't type on those thow. Mine have been gone a couple days now. I've backed up a couple times and hard reset and still gone. I will never make another shortcut again. Watch... I'll go check now after posting and they'll prob be back lol.

but please any one CMIIW because im just try and error this method, so no technical explanation about this, i just think that new keyboard same like clear white paper so your correct short cut will attached to your new keyboard, and it only works with keyboard that provider by apple, im sorry if my english not good enough because im just an apple fan boy from indonesia who has no access to apple genius or even apple care at all so once again CMIIW, thx everyone

    Live Chat

Now chatting with Josh, case # *******

JoshThanks for contacting AppleCare chat support. My name is Josh. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Josh Hey there, X! Your case number for todays Chat is ********. I hope you are having a fantastic day! How may I be of assistance?

Me:Hi Josh. I'm actually Peter. We keep getting old, previously-deleted shortcuts returning to OS X and iOS.

Me:Good description of the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6656922

Josh Oh dear, Peter! I can definitely understand how frustrating that can be. I use Keyboard Short cuts to be more efficient with my typing every day! I would be lost without being able to properly manage them. I'll be more than happy to help get this issue resolved for you today.

Josh Now Peter, I'm going to ask you some questions to work with you to resolve your issues on your iPhone today, would that be okay with you?

    Me:Yes.

JoshGreat, thank you! Before I guide you through troubleshooting this, are there any steps that you've taken prior to chatting with me? I don't want to ask you to try anything twice!

Me:Previously (not today) I deleted both the wanted and unwanted shortcuts from all our devices and Macs, but they always come back.

    Me:We have 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 4 Macs.

JoshThank you for the information! From the Diagnostic Report you submitted before our chat I am seeing that your iOS Software is out of date. With the latest iOS Software, it does include many enhancements to not only Safari but the Overall iOS System!

JoshOur first step in resolving this issue is to update not only this iPhone, but all of your iOS Devices, and your Macs! This will ensure, that we have the latest Safari, iCloud, Settings Preferences, and Syncing Protocols across all the devices!

Me:Okay. But the problem still exists for other users on the latest update. This issue has been around for ages.

    Me:All Macs are on Yosemite.

JoshNow, to check if your other devices need an update you can go to Settings > General > About > if updated to the latest software, the Version number should read 8.3. Here is a Step-by-Step Article on how to update your iOS Device! I will also email you this! Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Me:Was there a change to the syncing protocol with 8.3?

JoshYes, I do see from the Discussion Forums that it has not resolved some of the customers issues. However every case is Unique as we do not know, what Settings they have, if their devices have damage, as well as if their iCloud Accounts are provisioned properly.

JoshYes, with every update, we increase the Security as well as the Speed and Efficiency of iCloud Syncing between devices.

Me:I appreciate your help. I am unable to update all devices now as some are at work and some are at home. This recurring problem is impacting on our professional letters.

JoshAh! I understand! Well once you have all your devices up to date, please go ahead and delete the Shortcuts again! If they come back, please don’t hesitate to chat us back, so we can then further trouble shoot the issue! Not to worry, I have left detailed notes about the issue for the next Advisor; just in case it does occur again! Does that sound okay?

    Me:It's reasonable, but frustrating.

Me:I predict that I will update everything, delete old shortcuts, then in a few days or a couple of weeks, the old shortcuts will re-appear.

JoshI completely understand! However, I am very confident that updating all your devices will resolve this issue, because I have seen it resolve this as well as many other odd ball occurrences before!

Me:… and then Apple engineers will continue to add new features instead of fixing old bugs.

JoshIf they do re-appear, please don’t hesitate to chat us back so we can further intestate it! You can submit product feedback about this at http://www.apple.com/feedback

We have an entire team here at Apple whose job is dedicated to reviewing this feedback, and escalating it to the proper outlets (such as the engineers for iTunes, iPhone, iPad, etc.), so you can rest assured that your voice will be heard, about this bug!

Me:Because we use Apple products at work and at home, it is very difficult to get all products updated to the latest software at the same time.

Me:I'm sorry, but I have already sent feedback, but because Apple does not reply, and nothing changes, there is no way for users to know what Apple does with the information. Do you have a list of bugs that I can look at?

Me:Josh, are you able to pass this issue up the line to your manager? Or do you have to wait until I update all products?

JoshNo, we do not have a Public data base of known issues. This is due to the quick turn around time that we have to resolve any issue we encounter. However, if a system of ours is down you can see it at http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

JoshWe need to first update all of your iOS Devices to the latest iOS Software. This is always our first step, because it resolves most issues.

Me:There has definitely NOT been a quick turn around on this issue. The original post on that forum dates from Nov 2014. I had this problem before that.

JoshAll posts remain on the Forum no matter the time of Posting. They remain there in case someone does encounter the issue again. Additionally, that information is a year old, so the steps taken by those customers applied to the software and products that were in use at the time. So, our first step to resolve this issue, is update it to the latest software we have available to resolve this.

Me:Sorry. What I meant was that this issue on the forum has not been resolved - the problem still exists, and has existed since at least Nov 2014, 6 months ago.

Me:I would really appreciate it if you could pass feedback up the line. I undertake to update all my devices when I am able to.

JoshAbsolutely! Thanks so much for your time today, Peter, it was great chatting with you! If you have no further questions, I’ll go ahead and end our chat session now. Feel free to chat us back anytime, if you have any other questions or concerns! Thanks again, and I hope you have a great rest of your day!

Me:Thanks for passing feedback on to your supervisor!

Your chat session has ended. Thanks for using Apple's chat support.

Look, I've tried it all. NOTHING works!!! Besides factory reset! I just had to bite my tongue as ive been dealing with this for about a year. Idc what they say.. updates doesn't help. Sad how something incredible apple has created in the past and continues to grow into bigger and better things. BUT fail to address or acknowledge this huge problem. Maybe not to many but to me as a business owner who soley depends on shortcuts to make replying to clients faster. I've reset since my last post and have not had this problem again.

I too have this issue and it infuriates me!! I am not resetting my phone or iPad because even if I do that they sync from my Mac somehow and reappear on my iOS devices. I have tried everything except the keyboard language change so I will give that a go. Thanks.
