Q: FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused"

After upgrading my MPB to Yosemite, I elected to turn on FileVault. In the Security & Privacy panel of System Preferences, the status shows "Encryption paused" and the text under the progress bar reads, "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Trouble is, I am running from the power adapter!

I have rebooted and tried another power adapter. The battery icon in the menu bar correctly changes from battery to power adapter as I connect and disconnect. However, the encryption status never changes. I have left the machine running overnight with no change.

Any ideas?

Did you try to set up FileVault after the system was installed and updated or did you go through the OS install and choose FileVault during the install process?

Same as most ones here. Took my new mac out of the package and set it up and opted to run filevault. Big mistake.

...during the install process. I had done a PRAM reset prior to the 10.10.3 update.

So you tried filevault on first system startup and it failed, you reformatted the drive & let it run w/out filevault until 10.10.3 came out, ran the 10.10.3 update, reset PRAM, then enabled filevault and it works okay?

If I remember correctly, I reset the PRAM, installed the update, went to the File Vault pane, and successfully unpaused the encryption (and subsequently disabled FV).

Interesting. I undid the partial encryption by formatting the drive. I got the laptop new and since I didn't have anything on it, I was more OK with doing that thing.

I just took a Time Machine backup so I think I'll try the FV encryption tonight since I've updated to 10.10.3.

I had faced this issue for long with my new macbook pro. I tried reformatting, re- installing Yoesmite, but nothing worked.

The last attempt I made was verifying permission and then repairing them. Restart and press cmd+r. Go to disk utility and verify and repair permissions for your disk.

From what the logs said, there was some permission issues for a printer driver and which caused the Encryption to fail.

    Hope it helps.

So have this worked for you? I mean, I've noticed I had issues with printer permissions too, but nothing has changed.

It really amazes my, by the way, that the well known solution for the problem works for half the people here, and the other ones still can't get through it in any way.

Is this model dependent? Or, if not, what does it depend on? Any ideas?

I mean, there has to be some sort of a scheme.

10.10.3 didn't fix it for me either. I've done all the tricks mentioned, but none of them have helped. Still stuck. And it *****!

I just updated to 10.10.3.  After the reboot and installation FileVault started encrypting again.  After about 40 minutes encryption was completed.  I'm on a new 15-inch MacBook Pro, mid 2014, purchased about a week ago to replace a stolen MacBook Pro with the same specs.  I initially ran into encryption problems when trying to restore my new MacBook from a backup of my stolen MacBook. I ended up getting the "encryption paused connect to a power supply" issue that I couldn't resolve.

    Seems like it's fixed now.

I am not sure if this is what enabled it to work, but it worked.

    Here's what happened to me:

    1. Bought a 2015 Macbook pro w/ 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and Intel Iris Pro graphics (in February, I think I was on 10.10.1)
    2. Plugged the Macbook into an older MagSafe charger using the adapter
    3. Booted into the setup wizard, started FileVault encryption from there
    4. Noticed minutes later in the System Preferences window, the "Encryption Paused, please plug into power" message
    5. Found this post, ended up using the repair tool to wipe the disk and reinstall OS X
    6. DID NOT enable FileVault during the setup wizard
    7. Waited for 10.10.3 to drop
    8. Made a time machine backup of the drive
    9. Plugged in the power supply that came with the Macbook (so the newer one, not the older one with the adapter like last time)
    10. Ran Verify Disk and Repair Disk Permissions, some printer stuff came up funky and was repaired similar to what AnindoM said
    11. Rebooted
    12. Opened System Preferences and started the FileVault encryption process and walked away, checking on it periodically
    13. In about an hour it reported that it was finished

I hope these steps help give context and help others get FV working on their machines.

Ok I solve mine without reinstall, time machine etc

    OSX 10.10.3

    1. get USB drive(UHDD) size bigger that internal

    2. boot into recovery

    3. unlock you drive(right click unlock) SSD1

    4. restore UHDD with content of SSD1(~6hr)

    5. on UHDD will be all your files unencrypted (i even boot machine from in to check)

    6. format SSD with Mac OS extended (journaled)

    7. restore SSD with content of UHDD(~6hr)

    8. ta da! you have all your files unencrypted

    9. boot as normal and turn on filevault

    10. after 3hr all become as it should be.

    Thank you so much Eugeny44!!!

I WAS stuck on this paused state since November/2014.

I followed your procedure and it solved my problem. Now, the disk is encrypted.

I am using Yosemite 10.10.4 (Public Beta).

    Thank you again.

I swear that this will be the last Apple product I buy if they don't solve this **** already. It's been months and I simply cannot afford to make a clean install. FFS seriously now. I've been a solid customer for years and this will be the last time I buy any apple product if they do not fix this.
