Q: is there anyway to get rid of the old iPhoto Library? It defeats the purpose of having a new software if I have to keep the remnants of the older one.

So an update for everyone. I went ahead and deleted my old iPhoto library and removed iPhoto. Everything is still working on the photos app and I have managed to upload 100GB worth of pictures and am using iCloud Photo Library successfully.

If I'm understanding this correctly, when Photos imports my 900Gb Aperture library that is located on an external drive, it will create a Photos library in the Pictures folder in my user account on my boot drive. Since this library just contains links and edit files to the image files on the external drive, there is no problem with having just 348Gb free on my boot volume. But if I ask the Finder to show me the size of the Photos library, it will tell me the combined size of the Photos links on the boot volume plus the image files on the external drive? Continuing to use Aperture will continue to modify the edit files in the Aperture library on the external drive, and images added to the library by Aperture will not appear in Photos because there is no mechanism to establish the link between the Photos library and the image file in the Aperture library. All will be good until it gets FUBAR by disconnecting the external drive. Also, I could be lulled into a false sense of security by independently backing up my external drive and boot volume, since if either original volume died, I might not be able to restore from the backup and expect all the links to work. Thus, once the Aperture library is imported into Photos, I should duplicate the Photos library on an additional external volume so that all the image files and Photos edit files will be on a single volume that I can backup repeatedly and expect each backup copy to work independently. Do I have this right?  Thanks!

TThe links created by the migration are hard links. This kind of link creates an try in the file table. The hard links in the Photos library will work, even if you delete the Aperture library completely. but you will need a backup of both libraries, if you keep using both Applications.

IF your Aperture library used referenced originals, this will be not hairlines but symbolic links. The referenced files  must not be deleted, Photos is linking to the same originals. and files imported as referenced will not upload to iCloud.

And this time on an iPad, that would not let me edit the post after posting. It's risky to post while using public transport, if the train dives into a tunnel and may lose the internet connection at a critical moment

I Think this is incorrect. The new photos library created from the old one will be on the same volume as the old one. Hard links cannot cross from drive to drive.

I just tried to find iPhoto, it has a cross through its icon in Applications folder, when I tried to open it, I get a message saying I need the latest version from the App Store, but of course it's not there anymore. Why has iPhoto disappeared altogether?

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to checking this out. After importing all night, Photos told me this morning that it was "Repairing Library" and was 59% complete. Hopefully it's not stuck; I'll check when I get home tonight. But there was no Photos library in either the Pictures folder or at the same level as the Aperture library on the external drive; I guess it won't show until the import is complete.
