Q: frigging iTunes!

Hello!

I am using iTunes v10.7 and cannot make it to do what I want it to do.

iTunes always opens whenever I download an audio file from the internet and automatically adds it to the library, whether I want it or not.

This was not happening when using previous versions of the app but, I cannot find a way to make this version of iTunes behave as previous versions did.

The only solution seems to be downgrading iTunes which I once did but can't remember how was it done.

Any help with this issue will be welcome.

Thank you

There are now three layers of applications that are playing together - Safari, iTunes and an add-in application. Since Safari and iTunes are both older, I would guess the add-in might be older, too. If it is not, that itself could be the source of the problem. It might be the problem anyway.

There are many with similar names. Likely it has a option that controls what happens with the file once it is downloaded.

The prefs show not to add to iTunes so this app is not the culprit.

The only other app that is active in my situation is YouTube to MP3 which is set to not add the downloaded audio files to iTunes:

I can't see any other app nor what is happening

Then some other piece of automation on your system, or a bug with your downloader. iTunes does not have a process that watches downloaded files. Since iTunes 9 there is a folder called Automatically Add to iTunes inside your media folder. Anything dropped in there will be integrated with the library when iTunes is running, but that isn't what is going on.

Ruben - there are still two older applications that may or may not be playing nicely with the third-party app, or even with each other. I asked about upgrading earlier because the first step in troubleshooting software incompatibilities is to make sure you have them all on the latest version. You can't or won't (I don't know - is your hardware capable of the upgrades?).

That makes it incredibly difficult to troubleshoot this to the final fault.

Strictly speaking all that window shows is you do not have add to iTunes selected in the tool's preferences.  It does not mention anything about what happens when the file is placed on the computer.  The tool could well be triggering the file to play too, and if you have iTunes set as your default media player then it is triggering iTunes.  The best thing you can do is remove the plugin and see if this behavior stops.  If it does then you have to decide which you want, using the tool or quiet.

Perhaps but, who can tell which?

I've tried to find anything that could get in the way, such as scripts, etc. but couldd not find anything so far; still trying

I've e-mailed the developers of YouTube to MP3 telling them about the issue, waiting for an annswer.

              This is not the case.

Is the add-in application YouTube to MP3?

If so, YouTube to MP3 is not older than any of the others but newer.

In any case, why would it be the problem source?

Safari and iTunes are both upgraded to the latest version the OS is capable of taking.

As for the third party app, it is the latest version available.

I have not experienced this kind of problem with other applications which were interfacing correctly even though they were not all "latest versions".

That window nor any other of the 3 applications involved in the process would show anything else.

The tool could well be triggering the file to play too, and if you have iTunes set as your default media player then it is triggering iTunes.

The tool is not triggering the file to play because the "Add to iTunes" box is unchecked.

Can't understand which plgin are you referring to, please explain.

Try downloading one of the mp3 files from this site with Safari: http://www.xamuel.com/blank-mp3s/

Does it play automatically and get added to iTunes? If not then your YouTube to mp3 downloader is the most likely culprit, regardless of its current settings.

It's not the age of the applications. It is rather their awareness of the capabilities of other applications. As it stands, Neither Safari nor iTunes has any programmatic knowledge of "YouTube to MP3." Consequently, my opinion is that "YouTube to MP3" is the culprit. Please try the test suggested by turingtest2.

    It doesn't play in iTunes.

Still waiting to hear from YouTube to mp3 people.

    Will let everyone know.

    Thanks

I believe I've found where the problem is; there may be other pieces of automation but let's see this one first (found in ~/Library/Preferences/com.mediahuman.YouTube to MP3.plist)::

Have not yet heard anything from mediahuman.

I agree with your assertion that you have found the source of the problem. It's in the add-on application.
