Q: gmail password gone

Following my update to the latest IOS, I can no longer find and edit the password for my GMAIL email accounts.

This is an issue because now the system is no longer able to receive mail, it is populating a Cannot Get Mail popup when I attempt to access the GMAIL accounts on the MAIL App of my IPhone. I can't do anything to change the password because the field is no longer displayed in the account settings page.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.3

    Howdy jbeck80,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

If you changed the password for your GMail account and want to update that on your iPhone, then simply remove the GMail account from the iPhone, and then add it back.

    1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    2. Tap the affected email account.
    3. Tap Delete Account.
    4. Add your account again.

    Have a good one,

My password had not changed since the update. Has this field been removed on purpose? This is rather inconvenient. I am also having trouble with me Me email.

So did you do what was suggested to you and delete  then re-add the account?

Google has been deactivating access to email accounts that do not use the gmail app or a web browser. They claim this is because nothing but Google's technology is secure enough. You should have gotten an email from Google telling you about this, with the option of telling Google that you REALLY want access that is not secure. You need to click a link in that email and tell Google you don't want your email to be secure.

I just found the link to the Google help page:

    https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255

    Quoting:

Google may block sign in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safer.

Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

    • The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
    • The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
    • Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird

    Access your account

To help keep your account secure, we may block these less secure apps from accessing your account, and you’ll see a “Password incorrect” error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you have two options:

    • Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
    • Go to Allow less secure apps and choose “Allow” to let less secure apps access your Google account. We don't recommend this option because it may make it easier for someone to gain access to your account.

If you’re still having issues accessing your account after trying the options above, see other reasons you might receive the"password incorrect" error.

I believe that the iOS 8.3 update included a new way of setting up gmail accounts  that opens up the standard gmail login box.  In the background the iOS device then gets a special authentication token to allow it to get your email. This is better because it means that the device never stores your actual password.

HOwever, as you have found out, it means the password box has been removed in the settings so if you need to change your password/re authenticate you have to delete it and start again. This has just happened to me because for some reason my iPad lost access.

Please remember though that you will need to make any changes to the settings again each time (archive or delete. Etc). It would be better if apple just provided a button to re authenticate.

    Hope this helps

    Paul

edit: no idea about mobile me/iCloud accounts though...

For macbook mail app just frame a mail and send to anybody. It will ask for password and will get authenticated. Didn't tried for iphone though.

This was by far the simplest option and it fixed mine in a few seconds!  I also closed my Calendar App (which sync'd with Google as well) and when I re-opened it, the exclamation triangle went away in a few seconds (probably because the password was stored in Keychain and accessed by both apps).

    Thanks @beingmani !
