You may be able to get several years out of the original battery
or a quality replacement, if your use is careful and considered
within the policies and instructions of how to care for battery.

Your useful battery life may vary depending on how the Mac
is used and if the computer was run until the battery went flat
or dead, that would have shortened the battery life even if the
system profile battery or energy section shows it has few cycles.

If the magsafe power adapter has dusty or dirty contacts, or if
they do not closely match and attach to those in the computer,
it may be that this would allow the battery to insufficiently charge.

These may be helpful links to resolve some aspects of your question.
You may still have to purchase a replacement battery from quality
source, to use with the computer. A spare magsafe is also suggested.
