Q: Antique iPod A1040 shows 0 songs, yet only 104Kb of the 15g capacity available. HELP!!

HELP! After sitting idle for the weekend, my antique iPod A1040 shows 0 songs, but only 104Kb of the 15g capacity available. I reset it twice, but no change. iTunes says it needs to be restored, but some of the music on it is irreplaceable as these old iPods could not transfer music off the iPod, only ONTO it. It seems the music is still there, and the iPod shows on the desktop by name, but I can't access the music.Suggestions?? Should I try to repair the hard drive in disk utilities? HELP!!

UPdate: I found my ancient copy of Senuti and it will play the music on the iPod, though the iPod still says 0 songs. when I checked the iPod in drive mode it shows a folder called DamagedFiles that shows 2 files one named 0000005f iTunesDB and the other named 000074c9 iTunesPrefs. I ran disk utilities on the iPod and these files may have been generated from that, but if the prefs and Database are indeed damaged, how can I rebuild those files?
