Q: kernel_task 800% cpu usage after 10.10.3 update

Basically my question people is as the title explains

After installing 10.10.3 my laptop is grinding to a halt and freezing

It turns out to be kernel_task is using 800% cpu usage

Does anyone else have this issue or maybe a resolution to fix it?

Simon

Currently attempting to download update and re-install it again but its taking forever! paying for 152MB only getting 10MB, not happy!

Have you just updated to Photos app & have you got iCloud photos active?

If it is uploading photos it may hog all your outbound traffic, causing other requests to be delayed.

There is a pause feature in Photos preferences - see if that makes any difference & report back here.

    This describes it…

Also post back if it is not the issue, you should continue with other tests, like Safe mode…

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

That will disable Kapersky so you can see the system without all the third party extensions & background jobs running. Be aware that nice graphics & other features will be disabled, so test as much as you can. If the OS is stable in safe mode you need to look at the third party items that get loaded in a normal boot.

Reboot to go back to normal - a progress bar at startup can be normal after using safe mode, give it time to rebuild caches.

    Hi,

Virgin Media UK in my area is crap during the night time! its slows down something rotten!

    UPDATE:

I installed the update combo again, no difference

I remove kapersky for a few hours and it startsing freezing again

However I have discovered, it seems to be happening when im surfing the internet! mostly Firefox?

So I have removed Firefox, cleaned profiles and files out, Reinstalled it and it does appear quicker ? fingers crossed it could just be a firefox issue!

BUT Ive also noticed too that my Adobe Flash is crashing quite alot ?

firefox says send bug report cuz adobe has crashed and funny enough the same with Chrome so maybe its a Flash issue ?

Can you answer any of my previous questions on Photos app? There is potential for it to cause problems.

You have so many Firefox crash logs you should probably delete the app & start over with it.

The same with Chrome if that is crashing too.

Also disable all the browser extensions in either of those apps & retest.

    Hi,

I must say when i first did the update and loaded the photos app it did neally crash my laptop and use up 100% of my upload speed,

but once it had finished what it was doing it was fast and normal

even now its fast and just works, altho i dont like the fact it took all my pics on my lappy and shared them with my iphone!

but thats another issue for another forum page LOL

I will update once I see how my laptop goes with the fresh install of chrome and firefox

    Hi All,

this is an update on this issue, 3 days have gone by so far and my laptop hasnt crashed or high cpu usage once!

My fix you may ask? I re-installed OSX

i didnt reformat my laptop and start a-fresh tho!

I just simply went into recovery mode then clicked Re-installed OSX and let it get on with it

I didnt lose any data or software, just a fresh install of osx files

so my only thing i can think of is the is something wrong with my OSX files ?

im just glad it hasnt crashed yet so far

Im going to reply back in a few more days and update on how its going

Glad everything is back to normal and just wanted to add that I have had to do the same thing three times now, twice with different versions of Mavericks and once with an early version of Yosemite for slightly different reasons but the same results.  I usually try the latest Combo Updater first, as that has often worked in the past, but did not on those three occasions.
