Q: imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance

iPad Air, iOS 8.1.2

AT LAST!!!!      Looking through the last few posts I wondered if it was a time validation issue.  I looked at the time on the iPad mini 3 and it was a couple of seconds different from what the internet was telling on my PC.  Now adjusted the time on the iPad to be the same as the internet checking that the minute changed bang on queue and guess what it then validated....   So back on to iMessage and Facetime   -  suggest others try to see if it works for them!!

another point is that although I had time and date set to automatic it was always doing that circling thingy.  So I had switched that off and it had defaulted to my location and timezone BUT it was perhaps a few seconds out of sync.

Simply turn off auto date time reboot then turn it back on then try any more feed back

hope this works for 'shana too - there's been a lot of effort gone on here without much from very quiet Apple - unless they sorted out out a server sync problem that was the route cause and ours have started working for that reason - but I suspect if there is a timing issue it could explain the problem with validation - however what about those people crossing timezones (or again the seconds may not adjust only the hours??).   But after over two weeks on a new iPad mini 3 at least it is now working !!!

Wow. No, it didn't help me :( I did try several times.

My clock IS off by just a hair ( I downloaded an app called Emerald) but going thru the steps to reset it doesn't seem to get it any more accurate.

I will pass this along to my senior tech person! Thank you!

If it was just the clock tho in my situation, I don't see why my friend's AppleID works on my iPad. Hers works everywhere. Mine works nowhere, my husband's id works on his iPod Touch but not on my iPad. I didn't try his id on my friend's iPad mini 1.

It is baffling. I'd be less confused if no one's ID worked on my iPad Mini 3 or if my husband's id works on my mini 3.

The inconsistency is driving me crazy.

It does the circle thingy when you have Set Time Automatically but have Location Services off....

The time and date was a fix for an earlier version of this problem. I'm glad it's helping y'all.

I am so surprised about this problem with the infallible iPad !

I purchased this iPad 3 mini exactly for this feature : Facetime (or shall I call it farcetime) to be able to communicate with my kids overseas. after 2 hours of frustration I start looking online for a solution, just to realize I am not the only one in this boat , having problems with Messages and Facetime.

Apple : can you suggest a solution please !  How would you expect a PC user to turn to apple devices when you kill his enthusiasm on the first day ?

Sorry Mcfloyd49 - this is not addressed to you , just venting my frustration.

Purchased for similar reasons and having the same experience.

According to the people I have talked to at apple, the do not particularly care what is reported here. I have tried to draw attention to this thread during my calls and I am told they cannot and will not use any unconfirmed reports that may or may not have similar issues. They do not monitor these forums and do not trend issues from the information posted here.

They would prefer to deal with individual issues and not acknowledge the possibility there is a larger issue. Maintain the illusion that apple is perfect and the any negative experience with their product is rare and isolated.

Everybody needs to call in report the issue and have it escalated to the engineering team.

On a side note... it leave a bad taste in my mouth that out of warranty devices will require a $29 fee to get support when the issue seem to be created by apple and not the user.

I noticed that support doesn't want to know about anyone who doesn't actually contact them, that's why I have been almost trolling this place trying to get people to call in. Or write or chat.

I don't think they are charging for people out of warranty on this issue. At least I haven't read about anyone being charged.

My clock is as accurate as I can get it - it runs a little slow even on auto update compared to an app I installed called Emerald Sequoia.  Not a lot slow, the most has been .053 seconds. And since I'm getting the time to compare from an app, it runs on the internet and can be off because of network congestion.

I did some research. The wifi iPad Minis keep time internally and have a reputation for being off, timewise. I assume the ones with a cellular radio get their time off the tower just like cell phones do. I haven't figured out if syncing the iPad to iTunes would make a difference - I know when I did a backup, restore and 8.3 update via iTunes on my computer it didn't help my message problem.

I have also been experiencing issues with signing in to FaceTime and iMessages on my Apple devices.  I have had several phone calls with Apple regarding this issue and the supervisor I spoke with told me that there is a problem on Apple's servers and the engineers are trying to figure out what is going on.  I am supposed to receive a phone call after this issue is resolved.  So far, I have not heard anything and I have since tried to sign in to FaceTime and iMessages and I still cannot.
