Q: Facetime and iMessage on Macbook Pro Retina display slow after Yosemite 10.10.3 Update

Basically I want to reset my user account to it goes to the best possible factory setting. I really don't want to create another admin account and setup everything again!

That may be the best solution as trying to hunt down the cause may be difficult.

If it still has the problem in safe mode, then it is either a setting or something that starts when you log in. It is something that is not in the other account.

The things that start up when you log in are listed as Login Items and User Launch Agents in the Etrecheck report.

If it is a setting or cache, it may be difficult to find. You could try deleting the caches (user/Library/Caches). Look for the folder with the name of the app and move it to the desktop.

Another option is the Containers. Again, they are named with the name of the app, but Messages is still iChat. I don't see a container for FaceTime.

If you move the Container and nothing changes, move it back. The caches can just be trashed if nothing happens when you move them.

And, as another long shot, try resetting your home folder permissions and ACLs.

Boot into Recovery.

From the Utilities menu, choose Terminal.

Type the following command and hit return:

resetpassword

Follow the prompts to select hard drive, then user.

Click the button to Reset home folder permissions and ACLs.

No, there isn't.

You need to open the ~/Library folder.

This is hidden by default but can be seen by holding down the ALT key in Finder > Go Menu and selecting the Library that shows up.

From there you can navigate to Preferences.

Consider deleting (Move to Trash) all the items with IDS in the name (you will have to restart Messages and reset the iMessages settings across the iPhone and Mac).

You will have to include com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist  Removing this one removes the ID from Messages and any Alternatives you have listed such as the iPhone Number.

You can also then navigate to the Caches Folder

The com.apple.iChat one here only holds things for Jabber accounts

The com.apple.Messages holds the Picture Folder for Buddies  (It does not save those from Contacts that are already in the Contacts app).

As Barney-15E said you can also navigate to the Containers folder then com.apple.iChat/Data/Library

Save the Messages folder and contents somewhere as this holds Saved Chats if you use it.

You can then delete the contents of the Preferences folder.

What happens is that most .plists hare held in ~/Library/Preferences.

However the app Reads and Write to those via ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences where Aliases point to the ~/Library/Preferences items.

AS Barney-15E has stated loss of Permissions to Read and Write via this route and the Original Preferences folder can result in issues.

Using Repair Permission in Disk Utility does not touch your Home Folder.

I have exactly this issue after upgrading to 10.10.3 as well. I've managed to track down what appears to be an important clue -- if I turn off all of the Contacts that are coming in from external services (Google and iCloud in my case) iMessage and FaceTime open instantly. If I add back in just iCloud, iMessage opens in about 15 seems. If I add in Google as well launch time slows to 40 seconds. Seems pretty clear that Messages and FaceTime in 10.3.3 are doing some sort of time consuming contacts scan on startup.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Internet Accounts -> iCloud

Uncheck "Contacts"

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Internet Accounts -> Google

Uncheck "Contacts"

etc

Open the contacts app; you should see no contacts listed (don't worry they haven't been deleted you're just not connected to the internet accounts that load them)

Now restart iMessage. It should start instantly.

That is not the normal presentation for having multiple Accounts in use in Contacts.

The regular issue is that all Contacts on the Mac show as Telephone numbers only.

When you first sync the Contacts to iCloud for instance they are loaded to the Cloud and effectively are no longer on your Mac.

When you "unsync" them you get a dialogue to suggest having "On Your Mac" which puts them back.

Having two or more active accounts, even if one is On My Mac, causes issues for Messages and the iMessages account.

The TomConrad post suggested to turn off all the synced accounts, and that worked!

I will move my contacts back to the Mac at some point, and not worry about syncing until they upgrade to 10.10.4!

Of course, one problem is that I have 7,000 records in this app. A few years ago I would do a subset for the iPhone, but then Google just put them in anyway on the 5, and it works fine.

If there is no syncing but there are Contacts listed in the app (You can elect to keep them when unlinking) then iMessages can show Numbers only for people in Chats/Conversations which is why I said to keep one account in the Contacts app.

However Tom relates this to allowing the app to start in fifteen seconds with one account (iCloud)  and you did seems to be saying there was not improvement in the other thread.

Yes, Messages simply will not start if I have any accounts linked. Perhaps the size of the database, but hey, that's not so big, 7,000. Is it?
