Q: how to install program from DVD

I am thinking of purchasing a new MacBook Pro. I have a program currently on a DVD which I would like to install on the MacBook. What would be the best way please? I do have the program on my iMac.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Use an external optical drive such as Apple's USB SuperDrive, or one inside another computer.

You will need a DVD player to attach to the MBP or you may be able to use Target Disk mode if the iMac is compatible.

    Ciao.

Presumably using the drive inside my iMac is via the sharing method but would that mean the iMac will need to be on whenever I wanted to use the program?

Question: With the computer you currently have, does the DVD have to be in the computer to run the program? If not then it is no different on your MacBook Pro. If the DVD does have to be in the computer - more than likely we are talking about a game that uses the DVD as a form of copy protection - I’m not sure if DVD sharing will let you run the game or not.

BTW - you don’t have to buy Apple’s external drive. Any USB drive will work and many are less expensive and more reliable than the external SuperDrive.

Thank you for the information and help. The program is Microsoft Office for Mac which I purchased as a DVD/CD and installed onto the iMac (so no, the DVD does not have to be in the computer to run it). I'm not sure whether I can use the program on more than one computer so thought if not, I would put it onto the MBP but remove it from the iMac. I used to use a PC and got used to Microsoft Office but wonder at the end of the day if it is really worth keeping. Thank you so much for your advice - it is much appreciated.

    Regards Gill

MacOffice Home comes in two varieties: a one computer version and a 3 license version. If you have the one computer version you will have to remove it from the old computer. Depending on how long ago you installed it and the alignment of the stars, after installing it on the new computer and running it for the first time you’ll probably get a message saying it is activated on another computer. You’ll get a phone # to call and after answering a couple questions you should be able to then activate it on the new computer. If you have the 3 license version just be sure to use one of the licenses you haven’t used. If you have to reuse one then you’ll get the same message as above and have to call Microsoft.

I recommend both Google Docs and LibreOffice as possible contenders to replace Office for many people. I work in academia and use Google Docs routinely for materials I give to my students and colleagues but I also find there are certain things I just need Office for.

Again thank you. My MacOffice Home is a one computer version. Microsoft make such a fuss with its updates. I have downloaded LibreOffice and so far have been impressed with it. I was able to open a Word document table in it. My husband will also be using the MacBook Pro and uses Microsoft Access on his PC. It looks as though there will be no problem using his databases in Base Database (once he has sorted how to transfer them!). Thank you again as I think I am all sorted now. Regards Gill.

I would buy the MacBook Pro with the built-in optical SuperDrive.  When traveling, you can just pop in a DVD and watch it.

Thank you for that as I didn't realise that was a possibility. I shall investigate further.
