Q: Why is Messages screen sharing icon grayed out?

Trying to do remote screen sharing with my mom's Mac using the new feature in Yosemite.

If you're not familiar with it, the new method does not require AIM, Jabber, etc and is independent of screen sharing settings in System Preferences (per Messages Help).

The procedure is:

In the main Messages window, select the name of the person you want to share with or, if you haven't previously exchanged messages, do so now.

Click 'details' on the right of the top bar of the main window.

In the menu that pops up, there are three icons: screen sharing, video chat, and audio chat/phone call. Click the screen sharing icon and send a request.

Today, my mom signed into her Messages account and we successfully exchanged iMessage messages (not SMS).

When I clicked 'details' the screen sharing and phone call icons were grayed out (or, more accurately, 'blued out' - they were a fainter shade of blue).

I clicked another name in the Conversations list and then clicked back to my mom's name. When I clicked 'details' this time, the screen sharing icon was no longer grayed out, so I sent a request to share her screen. She didn't receive the request, so I canceled it.

When I clicked on 'Details' again, the screen sharing icon was grayed out again. As far as I know, nothing had changed on my mom's end.

What could cause the screen sharing icon to be grayed out? And what could cause it to toggle back and forth between grayed out and normal?

Both computers are running the latest version of Yosemite, 10.10.3. Mine is a 2009 Mac Pro 8-core with 16 GB RAM, hers is a MacBook Pro from around 2012 or 2013.

Thanks!

Try clicking on the little arrow in the name that is in the Address field. You should have the option to share your screen with that person, or invite them to share their screen.

the new method does not require AIM, Jabber, etc

You seem to be referring to Bonjour. That only works over a local network, not over the Internet. Is that how you're trying to use it?

@Barney - no, that's not where the feature is found.

    @ Linc:

    No, not Bonjour.

Here's an article that shows what I'm trying to do:

    http://appletoolbox.com/2014/11/screen-sharing-osx-yosemite/

This new feature is also documented in Messages Help. Go to 'Audio or video chat, or share your screen' > 'Share your screen'

    That's Bonjour screen sharing.

I wasn't trying to explain the "feature."  I was trying to explain how to do what you want.

One piece of info I forgot to mention is that using this exact procedure, I was able to share screens with a remote computer a few days ago.

In other words, it worked exactly as described in Messages Help and in the article linked above.

Isn't Bonjour just for local networks? If that's correct, then since that computer was remote (i.e., accessed via the internet, not on my local network), this cannot be Bonjour.

Barney - When I click the down arrow on people in the list, the screen sharing option is only present with the person with whom I've already successfully done Messages screen sharing. With my mom, it only shows her email address and phone number.

Since the down-arrrow option was not mentioned in either the Messages help document or the article I linked to, I'm assuming that you can't use that method to initiate conversations the first time.

If I'm wrong about any of this, please correct me.

Otherwise, I'd appreciate it if further replies were directly related to resolving the problem I described in the original post.

I did, but then, I'm not sure I understand what that means.

How ow would you initiate a conversation the "first time" any different than all the other times.

SInce you wanted to use iMessage to video chat which doesn't appear to be supported by Apple, I offered a way which I had discovered and used successfully.

I was able to share screens with a remote computer a few days ago.

Then you did it by one of the means listed in the support article linked below. There is no other way.

    Messages (Yosemite): Share your screen

Barney - I don't know why this would be different - I'm just speculating that it's different based on what I've observed. In any case, the method you described with the arrow doesn't resolve my problem.

Linc - The procedure in that article is exactly as I described in my original post. However, I think the article is erroneous when it says 'You can't share screens using Yahoo! or iMessage', in that Yosemite now allows the latter. I suspect that sentence was just copied from a previous support document.

According to the current help for Messages, screen share over iMessage is still not supported, but it does work in the way I noted, and using Details. However, your Messages has to know there is another Mac at the other end. I don't know how it determines that. If it doesn't know, then neither method will work.

What exactly do you mean by 'the current help for Messages'?

In a previous post, I described how to navigate to the specific page in Messages help that says this is possible, and, to repeat what I said in my previous post, I'm pretty sure the help document on the Apple web site is incorrect. (I still have Apple Care and will call to verify if I have time.)

Further, see this link, which is to the Apple web page describing new features in Messages for Yosemite:

    http://www.apple.com/osx/all-features/#messages

Here's a screenshot of that page.

    modified.jpg

This is the feature I've described in this thread.

I'd appreciate it if further posts in this thread would stick directly to the issue I described in my original post - the greyed-out screen sharing icon in the 'Details' pop-up menu.

If you haven't had that specific problem, then please don't post here.

    Thanks!

    Update:

A senior AppleCare agent generously and patiently spent over an hour on the phone with me and my mom trying to help. Unfortunately, he couldn't really answer the questions 1) why was the screen sharing icon grayed out and 2) does the Messages-based screen sharing icon represent a new screen sharing method independent of AIM, Google, etc.? (He did say that he'd heard that due to changes in Google's system that their accounts no longer work with Messages.)

However, today I did the following test:

    1. I deleted my AIM account from Messages and had my mom do the same. The result is that we each only have two items in the Accounts window of Messages: an iMessage account (signed in with our Apple IDs) and a Bonjour account.

    2. Clicking on the Details menu, the screen sharing icon was available for both of us. It was not grayed out.

    3. We each tried both options - requesting to share the other's screen and inviting the other to share our screens. Sometimes the other person would receive the invitation notice, and sometimes not.

In the cases where we were able to accept the invitations, we were sometimes briefly able to establish connections, but before we could see each other's screens, we'd get a message that the other person had terminated the session, despite the fact that neither of us ever actually did that.

A couple of times, I got a message telling me to make sure screen sharing is enabled in System Preferences in the other person's computer. This is odd because 1) the documentation says that this screen sharing method is independent of that setting; and 2) in any case, screen sharing is already enabled in Sys Prefs on my mom's MacBook Pro.

Based on this test, I still think that the screen sharing icon in the Details menu is part of a new method of screen sharing introduced in Yosemite, which does not require a third party account.

However, it doesn't work, it's poorly documented, and Apple's staff haven't been informed about it.

By the way, we both checked settings in Connection Doctor, and everything was fine (no bandwidth limits, etc).

Later, we both added AIM accounts back to Messages and were able to share screens through the buddy list without incident.

    Hi Linc,

    Actually it is not.

It is a complete nightmare using two different systems in the same app.

AIM, Jabber and Bonjour need the Video Menu and the Screen Sharing there to be Enabled.

You needs the same Speed Internet Connection as a Video Chat.

This "iChat Method" still work in Messages to Buddies (AIM, Jabber  and Bonjour) using the same service as you (AIM to AIM etc).

The iMessages Account can now Screen Share.

It Invokes the Screen Sharing App and the setting in System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing needs to be Enabled.

This then uses the Details drop down than the icon to Invoke  (the other two icon Invoke FaceTime so there is sort of continuity).

The Connection Doctor has nothing to do with the iMessages Screen Sharing as it only refers to the older "iChat Method".

As the iMessages Method cannot connect to anything but another Mac running Messages  it is a complete waste of time when there is a method that works for this already that could have been expanded for the iMessages account.

    Hi,

(He did say that he'd heard that due to changes in Google's system that their accounts no longer work with Messages.)

What he has heard and what are true are two different things

    Logged in Google account

    Google.png

There are issues with Messages using SSL to login to the Google Talk server and Google saying SSL is Less Secure (there is a  setting to Enable Less Secure apps like Mail that also uses SSL and Messages).

Some people find that 2 step Verification cannot be set at Google's Account settings if your want to use the Less Secure Apps setting.

This is using two different Methods of Screen Sharing in Messages (It is silly it has two but there we go)

For AIM use the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom or highlight the Buddy and use the Buddies Menu

DO NOT USE the Details option.

For iMessages start text chat then use the Detail Option an NOT THE BUDDIES Menu.

For the iMessages Method you have to Enable System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing to allow the App to be Invoked.

(It is like FaceTime is invoked but only works to Macs)

As you mention the Connection Doctor only refers to the older "iChat Method for Aim and Jabber and Bonjour - if you can Video you should be able to Screen Share with that method.
