On Thursday the 16th , I did 2 things from Apple Support's Knowledge Base, and I am presently no longer seeing this issue as I first reported it. It might come back, but no incorrect  values in the Status Bar now for 2 days. Reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC on my MacBook Pro mid-2012 as detailed in these two articles. Be sure to alway back up before performing system tasks.

NVRAM: How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

SMC: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Please post back if it works for you. Good luck.

This seems to have done the trick until Apple can address this - local 'snapshots' were taking up almost 300GB of space on my startup disk...not good for the longevity of my SSD!!!

To elaborate, following the command line instructions to disable Time Machine local backups from howtogeek.com fixed my missing disk space and the impossible disk space values reported by System Information:

I reset NVRAM to see what effect it would have without resetting the SMC and it corrected the problem for two days, but it has now recurred. I've read the instructions for resetting SMC and it seems to be recommended for symptoms completely unrelated to this one. Has anyone had luck with this as a long-term fix?

I have the same problem with a TOL mid 2014 MBP.

    218TB storage available in a 1TB SSD.

I have worked twice now with senior Apple Tech, and after lots of testing and reinstalling 10.10.3. The same bug is appearing.

Apple is aware and they are working on a fix, it will probably be a service update at some point. The good news at least for now is that it does not seem to affect the usability of the SSD. I use it for very large video files that get moved around from cameras to this MBP on location and then copied to other drives and computers. So it is very annoying to not know how much space is available at all times.

I bet a lot of users have this problem and don't even know it.

Lets hope there is a quick fix.

Here is how crazy my different displays of SSD usage is reported by OS10.10.3:

Resetting NVRAM and SMC did nothing for me.

    Still looks like this:

    This issue is not resolved.

Also seeing this issue on an early 2011 Macbook Pro with an after-market SSD drive installed - available space showing as 140.96TB on a 960GB SSD drive. From the sound of things it's a straight-up bug. Will look into the local snapshots thing though.

This has been making me totally crazy.

Equally the storage available was changing - when I did a verify disc it changed to 773TB available.

Quite the feat on a mac book pro with a 250gb drive ...

When I went to about this computer it was equally bizarre showing I was using 228gb of space for "back ups" ...

Ok so this is the solution I found - and for me it worked.

In finder go to Devices and open up your Mac BookPro Device,

you will find a hidden folder MobileBackUps ...

If you need to find how to show hidden files in Google type "finder show hidden files"

or go to this link:   http://ianlunn.co.uk/articles/quickly-showhide-hidden-files-mac-os-x-mavericks/

You will then see MobileBackUps and if you have calculate sizes on the file size will

match what you see in the Storage Tab in  "Storage" About This Mac.

(or at least it matched for me).

Based on the link below I ran in terminal the following command:

      sudo tmutil disablelocal

My finder status line is now back to normal - showing GB not PB or TB,

and the numbers actually are the same as when I use finder to show files

    and disc space used.

For a Solution that WORKED FOR ME

        Or HERE:    https://kye.id.au/os-xs-mobilebackups-what-is-it/

and yes I tried many things before I found this ... nothing worked ok?

    only turning off MobileBackUps worked.

I'm afraid to disable local snapshots (mobilebackups) is not a solution for this problem, because you have to disable a feature that could be very helpful in some cases, and before the update to 10.10.3 Finder displayed the correct values, even if you had local snapshots (mobilebackups) enabled. This has to be solved by Apple, not by disabling this feature.

In my conversations with senior Apple tech, he stated that it would be a bad idea to disable local snaps. And his opinion is that as long as there is no disc damage reported in dis utility then there is no reason to worry. Apple is working on a fix, but this is not a very high priority so it may take a while. His opinion is that this is simply a bug in the info displayed and it does not affect function of the SSD.

My experience working with some large files in the last few days bears this out, No problems. So lets just hope for a maintenance update soon as this is a bit disconcerting.

No use to get into a circular discussion  -  but some of my issues:

Disc utility was reporting random issues every time I ran verify on my SSD Drive

      - very strange and each time I ran repair disc the free space numbers would change,

and the next day if I ran verify my disc - voila more issues and a request to repair the

disc - huh?  this is a SSD drive ...

Frankly the key issue for me was I do not like my Mac Book Pro or any computer

showing inconsistent results no matter how inconsequential - but random errors on

my main system disc - sorry - but this is consequential and if the cause is a hidden

app that "might be useful" I am only all to happy to turn it off, when it behaves and

plays nice then maybe it can come back.

Read the link on how Mobile Apps works and what it does, I have 250GB SSD - I really don't need to give up

228GB on my Mac Pro Disc to Mobile Apps - Time Machine and everything else works fine without this silent

      Apple partner standing by.

Yes it's a bug - but Mobile Apps takes high amounts of space on my drive ... frankly I don't need it - so turning

it off gives me working space on my SSD and correct disc space calculation,

Resetting SMC and NVRAM didn't change a thing, I'm afraid.. We'll have to keep waiting on a solution from "up above" :-/
