Q: Apple Watch Sport screen scratched?

After 2 days of normal use and looking after my watch better than my own child I have found that when in direct sunlight i can see what appears to be a hairline scratch directly down the centre of the face. I just cannot understand why this has happened? nothing has bumped or came into contact weigh the face other than my finger, even at night when its on charge i placed it in an old pillow case until I can get a stand? Im very meticulous about looking after my products and find this very unsettling that its happened after 2 days. Its really distracting when I'm outside as the scratch scathes the light constantly.

Im sure if I go into the store I will basically be told its my own fault but what do you think my options are? is it possible that this was on the screen before I got it?

Just would like to know if anyone else has had this issue?

Cheers

Same.  I have scratched the face of my Apple Watch Sport this morning somehow.  The scratch was not there when I put on the device 3 hours ago and now there is a scratch in the top right corner.  I don't recall the watch striking or rubbing against anything.  I am very careful with all of my devices.  I have had 5 different iPhone models and never needed a screen replacement.  I too find it very troubling that the device is already damaged.

What will it cost to have the screen replaced?  I'm thinking about buying AppleCare+ for the first time ever.

This is quite surprising given all the scratch test that have been done by people over the past several days and posted online. Everything from cheese graters to knives, so I would be surprised and upset too. I haven't got mine yet and am debating adding one of the 3rd party protectors, but didn't really want to add bulk or anything to such a beautiful device so I was waiting for feedback from other users on this very topic, and the scratch resistance of the black since the black sport is what I ordered.

Same with mine. Doesn't make any sense. It's driving me crazy just trying to understand what made the scratches.

My Apple Watch Sport scratched in less than 12 hours of use, and I did NO damage to it.  I'm not sure how it happened, but I called up Apple and they are letting me send it for free to get repaired, or get a new one depending on what happens.

I have a bunch of Apple Products, and nothing has scratched this easily ever before for me.

Only sad part is I'm going to be waiting again for the Watch, after waiting 17 days to get it yesterday.

I am interested sending mine in for repair. I would be willing to do without the watch for a while while being fixed. How did your phone call with Apple go?  Did you just explain what happened and they offered to fix it free?  How difficult was it to get them to agree to this?  Do you have AppleCare+ or an special service agreements?

I told the guy that I wasn't happy that within less than 12 hours of use having my Apple Watch, it scratched.  I'm a teacher, and there is nothing crazy that I did from when I woke up, to roughly around 11:30AM when I noticed it.

He asked for me to send him a picture which I did, and asked if I knew if I did it, or if it was like that, etc.  I basically told him, I'm not sure what happened (which is true), and that I'm upset that this screen which apparently has great reviews, scratched so easily when all my other Apple products look fine.  I have had an iPhone 6 since September, and that looks better then my watch after 1 day.

He didn't push Apple Care+ on me, and said that he agrees that something isn't right.

When you drop money like this, I'd expect something a little bit better.  Lets hope the repair doesn't take forever.

yikes. I'm grabbing a screen protector tomorrow. I was going to get a tempered glass protector, but I don't think companies can get that curve, they don't capture the sides.

I'm getting a Zagg screen protector tomorrow. I'll let you know how it looks if you like. I'm not going to wait for it to get scratched.

I have worn my Apple Sport Watch for all of 2 days.  By the end of Day 1, I already had several scratches on the face, including a deep one that goes diagonally across most of the face, right smack in the middle.  I have treated the watch with kid gloves, wearing it only during the day, and putting it in the case at night.  I work a desk job, so no manual labor or bricklaying or anything like that involved.  I have not even used it yet during workouts or exercise.  I did not scrape up against any brick walls, or any walls whatsoever.  I have been extraordinarily careful (far more so than one should have to be with a watch) not to bump it into anything.

Needless to say, I am both devastated and furious.  If the watch has this much damage after a couple of days of very light usage, in a month or so I won't even be able to see the screen for all the scratches.  Apple touted this glass as being extra strong and hard.  I realize that it is not as hard as the sapphire one, but geez, this is ridiculous.  It is supposed to be "wearable" technology.  Anyone else having these issues??  Do I have any recourse?

First of all, It's impossible for it to have come from the factory with the scratch on the screen.  It doesn't happen.

Second, it's scratch resistance has nothing to do with how long you've all owned it.  If the watch comes in contact with an object or surface that is harder than the glass, it will scratch; no matter how long you have had it on your wrist.  Only having it in one's possession for 12 hours or 24 hours matters.  That makes it worse for you personally, but says nothing about the quality of the device.  Every watch and jewelry in existance could be scratched similarly just as quickly if mistreated.  And it should be something that an owner of such a device expects to occur at some point when they buy it.

Third,  Apple runs a period of engineering analysis on what sort of issues people are having within the first few weeks to month(s) after a device comes out.  During that time, the Genius Bar and AppleCare phone support is allowed to be much more lenient about accidental damage cases and can mail it in for repair or replacement even if it appears to be damage and not defect that has occurred.  So take your devices to Apple quickly, and ask them to send it in.  You can't loose, they might just tell you it's not covered.  But you certainly loose if you wait until a few months pass and try.  Right now, it's been released for too short of a period for in-store personnel to know for sure if something is due to defect or damage, so push back if they seem reticent.

I received mine today, and all it's done is sit face-up on a batch of paper towels for about 2 hours.  I lifted it to put it on my wrist and noticed an inch-long hairline scratch on screen!!

    Needless to say I'm gutted.

I assume if I take it to Apple/Genius Bar, they won't have any in stock to replace it with?

I didn't buy Apple Care with my Watch, and I won't be able to purchase it now as it says retrospective Apple Care purchase requires inspection of Watch!

They do not currently stock them due to the extremely high demand.  A week or less turn around time seems to be the common outcome.  But take it in, they will likely trust you that nothing should have caused the issue and send it to engineering for replacement
