    Hi Catherine....!!

Do you know that even on the Windows PC, installing two anti virus programmes is considered unsafe for the system. The reason is because they both conflict and cause a false alarm against one another, resulting in instability of OS.

You seem to have installed two anti virus programmes like Avast and IBM’s Trusteer Rapport. In Macs, its not at all recommended to install any kind of anti virus programmes. They always cause conflicts. Please uninstall these two softwares immediately.

There is one more notorious and malicious programme which you have installed unintentionally thats Mackeeper. Mackeeper is a type of a malware which will corrupt your vital OS X files. Uninstall it by dragging the Mackeeper application into the trash. Later download this app called Find any File....http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

Only download it from the provided link and not from anywhere else, as there are chances that the software is pre bundled with Mackeeper or any other malware. The reason I am suggesting you to run this software is because you wont be able to delete eah and every bit of Mackeeper file even if you manage to trash the Mackeeper app. These small bits run in the background and cause the system slowdown.

Its a full featured trail version. You may buy it if you want. Appstore sells only the paid version of it but you can try it for free on the developers website. Search for Mackeeper and remove all the files associated with it after searching with this app.

    Hope this helps....

Looks like I've been beaten to the punch, several times over!

Just so you know the reasons for removing these things, Trusteer has been known to cause a variety of issues with Safari, and could explain some of the problems you're seeing. Avast is just all-around bad in general, and the company used to include adware in the Avast distribution for a while. I believe they removed it, or made it default to "off," after significant backlash. But still, do you want to use something made by a company that thinks adware is okay?

As far as MacKeeper goes, it's just plain fraudulent in every way, except by letter of law. Mostly because you can't prove to a lawyer who doesn't know anything about computers why MacKeeper's claims are false, much less have a lawyer argue that case to a judge or jury. A couple class-action lawsuits have been attempted, but seem not to have gone anywhere.

If you get all those things removed - using the proper uninstaller for each of them, mind you! - check back in here and let us know if the problems are gone or not. If not, we can give you further things to try.

davis1402, you are right that there are no viruses for mac but only at this point of time.

Do you know that the term Malware is like a umbrella under which several malicious softwares like Viruses, trojan horse, worms, adwares, spy wares, ransom ware, etc comes.

All Viruses are Malware but all Malware are not Viruses.

Yes, that was really helpful because I had no problem finding and deleting Avast and Trusteer, but I couldn't even find MacKeeper. EtreSoft found it and I could delete/send-to-trash most of the MacKeeper presences except for two:

    MackKeeper Atd, unix executable file

    MacKeeper folder.

Any suggestions as to how I get rid of these two?

I'm honestly not sure what MacKeeper puts where or how to remove it at this point. I haven't kept track. However, there is a utility you can use to remove any MacKeeper hangers-on, called DetectX. It's made by a guy who wrote the most definitive MacKeeper removal instructions a while back, and who hates those folks with a passion. You can find it here:

yeah! It looks like, even according to detectx, the evil known as Mackeeper is exorcized.

To everyone-- I have bookmarked many of your helpful links for future use, though hopefully there will be no need.

Glad we could help! Your current EtreCheck data looks much better.

The real test, though, is did that solve the problems that you were having? You may not know for sure yet, so just make sure to check back in if there's still something going wrong.

Catherine, your system Etrecheck report completely looks normal. It seems that you have somehow managed to get rid of Mackeeper...

Only suggestion for the future would be, never ever use any Anti virus programme, never visit any unknown websites or download data from the websites, as the download installer may come bundled with mackeeper or any other malware. And finally, always be alert while using your machine....

I hope that me and other contributors of this forum have been of some help to you....

Point taken, Granel. Acutely. There are nasty and malicious people out there, even under the guise of offering security programs, and it's up to me to protect my computer.

But this forum experience has not only been helpful, it's been... refreshing-- a nice counterbalance for me to encounter kind strangers instead.

Finally, I do note that while it was your one piece that finally solved my puzzle, I couldn't have arrived at that point without the direction of several contributors. So--thanks to you and to everyone!
