Since Mail is prompting you to enter your Gmail password every time you connect, you likely have Google's two-step verification enabled and will need to create an app password. To learn more please see the information below.
Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you turned on Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail now requires the appropriate app password.
If Mail on your Mac keeps asking for your password - Apple Support

Jun 6, 2015 8:47 AM in response to alex_h1by oly va ha,That is in correct, now with OS X 10.10.3 Google has implemented 2step as the only way to login and will not accept a app password to login in Internet Accounts. You must use 2step and it seems it is broken and like always calling AppleCare will result in a push to Google who has no customer support to speak of. Awesome.
