The short time the watch face stays illuminated is an annoyance but I expect that will be addressed in an OS update, hopefully sooner rather than later.  The watch was just released and we're on Apple OS 1.0 so I am confident they'll get the kinks worked out in future updates, like the multilingual issues.  I'm happy with mine although I don't use it in critical situations like your wife does.

    @KAYE

Quite so - and for the record I also could do with a (variable) period for the displays to stay ON - obviously that would be at a cost to battery usage.

Something like ability to chose from 15, 30, or 60 seconds would be ideal.

What about using the "timer" function?  Either countdown or elapsed?  Either way you would know how many seconds have passed.  Make the timer the top app in the glance list maybe?

Both the Timer and Stopwatch functions go to sleep as well.

But do they stop their timing action or keep running in the background, until the set time is up and then come alive again ? ?  If not then they are truly of limited use.

I use the stopwatch occasionally and the timer frequently and they both continue to run when the watch face is off.

use the stopwatch app it does not turn off the screen and it will be more accurate as to counting it on the watch face, or if this fails (which i will not because it wont turn off) put the watch on the patient and check heart rate in glances! a quick way to also use the stop watch app is open it first so when she actually looks at her watch, double tap the crown and it will launch the last app (stopwatch). also she could use the chronograph watch face but of course it will turn off but it can be turned back on with wrist raise and the stop watch in top right corner will still be going, and the stopwatch can also be added to any face. another thing i might suggest is setting a timer for 1 minute then at the timer to the watch face so it is available for quick easy access and the watch will sound when the seconds is up and your wife will know when to stop taking the pulse.

I hope i helped you, i dont believe you can return the apple watch so i hope one of these solutions will help! i understand this is a problem apple should fix or just allow the user to set the time when the screen will turn off but for now these are the best solutions i could come up with! i hope you and your wife enjoy your new apple watch!

I just tried the stop watch app.  The screen blanks at ~20 seconds.

The Apple watch, or indeed any "smart" watch, cannot be all things to all people.  Use it within its design limitations, and it will be fine; force it outside these limitations and there will be consequences , certainly on the already limited battery life.

So perhaps we have to accept that in some circumstances a different watch will be necessary. For example the Watch has not got GPS on board, so dedicated sporting types may well prefer a guaranteed waterproof item giving them the exact data they need.  Medical people will have other needs.

But there are some things that would benefit from a little tweak here and there in the software, and so if enough people ask in the right place, then something might be done in future OS updates.

We all want the watch to succeed, don't we ? - and many buyers still have to get their Watch in the following weeks and months.  It will indeed be an interesting time !

The stopwatch and the timer continue to run, however.  If you set the timer it will alert you when time is up even if the screen is blanked.

Agreed that the timer continues.  The OP was wanting to keep the time face with second hand on the screen to assist in timing pulse or another thing for medical screening.  My comment was related to Ethan Pirso's post stating

"use the stopwatch app it does not turn off the screen and it will be more accurate as to counting it on the watch face".

    Which is not correct.

I have ordered my Apple Watch - don't have it yet.

But from the Manual, I believe you can keep the watch on by raising your wrist.  Settings > General > Activate on Wrist Raise.

True, the screen blanks with the stopwatch as it does with everything else.  It seems to me that using the timer set to one minute would solve the OP's problem as it will give an alert when time is up.

this is in an emergency room, or possibly in the parking lot, there is no assurance how much time can be spent with the patient, so for instance if after 25 seconds the patient is moved then the calculation is based on 25 seconds.

Again, it is not just counting a pulse, it is also feeling for irregularities and how long they last.

The watch face needs to be visible for at least 30 seconds to do an assessment.

There are also other reasons for the watch to stay on longer.  I use my Watch while golfing with the Golfshot app to determine distances on the course.  It often takes more than 4 seconds for the GPS to lock onto the correct distance, especially if you have just stopped walking.  Having the Watch stay on longer is very useful in this instance.
