Q: Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albums

I just installed Photos on my iMac.  I have taken a LOT of time making Events in iPhoto.  Is there a way for me to convert the Events I made with iPhoto into Albums for the new Apple Photos software?  It would take me a LONG time to make new Albums and then copy all the Event images into the New Albums.

Is there a way to automate this?

Maybe we have found a new bug. I just tried what I had written before, and I had the same issue as you described above. But, I switched between View > Hide Sidebar and View > Show Side Bar and pressed command-1 and now I see "Move Album Out Of "iPhoto Events".

Thanks for the suggestion.. didn't resolve it for me though. I will post a new question about it and see if anyone else can help. If not will report as a bug. Cheers.

you are right clicking on the left sidebar which will give only those options. Gone VIEW menu and hide side bar, now you will see at the top the ALBUMS tab. Go there and you'll see all your albums (previous iPhoto events) right click there on the desired album and voila! there you have all your options.

Long story short don't right click on the side bar view, but instead right click on the albums view

Thank you, that explains the difference.  Different topic, but can you tell me how to get back to the Tool Bar with Photos, Shared, Albums, Projects in the center?

Tried all the View options, only has individual areas. Maybe I messed up the side bar view as well?  Many thanks for your help, Janet

If you do what explained above, you'll get back the top menu with said tabs.

shortcut = Go to the VIEW menu and select "HIDE SIDEBAR"

yep, now I get it, thanks (why they don't make the possibility of doing it in the sidebar as well, that's another story!)

Before loading the new Photos app , I did the laborious transfer of events manually by creating Album (using the same name), and copying and pasting photos from Event to that new Album. So, I had 1 Event corresponding to 1 Album (both same name). Sometime before the new Photos app had come out, it was becoming apparent from various posts, that Events was going to disappear.

I then Loaded up the Photos app (Yosemite update), and everything migrated perfectly. I do have iPhoto Events folder, with all my previous Events showing up underneath. I also have all the Albums showing up as individual Albums.. I have one big question as to the final setup. (next paragraph)

When I click on the iPhoto Events folder I get to see all the different events (I had in previous iPhoto) in their own windows with their respective names ,to the right side showing up. I like being able to scroll through to spot an event. However, I can't spot how to invoke the same capability, with the new individual Albums that were set up. i.e. If I click on an individual album, then I can see the individual photos within the album.

Is there a trick to being able to see All the albums that I have set up under one Folder, similar to aforementioned iPhoto events folder?

If I could be able to do that, then I would go and Delete that iPhoto Events folder (seeing as they are all made into Albums), and I could see All albums appearing under one folder,

Perhaps I have to set up a Smart Album, and drag all my albums into that?

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Thanks "Old Toad" . Valuable info.  So, is there any point to retaining that iPhoto Events folder any more? In terms of being a purist? It served its purpose during migration. Seems to me that now my combined Albums (each individual Album folder) and that iPhoto Events just results in overkill, or over indexed (if I might use such a term).

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm very frustrated because when I used to import photos and iPhoto separated them into events by date, I could rename that date on the event into a more descriptive name (i.e. Cancun 2015).  It was easy to tell which photos had been put into a named event folder and which hadn't yet been dealt with because those I hadn't dealt with yet were still in a "date" event.  Now I either see ALL photos with no organization at all (one giant pile of all of my photos) or the Moments organization by date, which doesn't tell me whether I've put those photos into an album yet.  In other words, there's no way to tell whether I've "filed" pictures into albums yet.  Anyone else struggling with this?

Everyone with a similar workflow to yours.

You could use Albums instead, and then a simple Smart Album

    File -> New Smart Album

Album -> is not -> Any

    Will find unfiled images.

Thanks Terence!  Good idea... just wish I didn't have to find a workaround for something that worked just fine before!

i went to trouble of making an album for each of my events

before migrating to Photos app. Result: It created One album (Folder)containing all my Individual Events and then there were all my individual Albums that

showed up outside that folder as individual albums. Question: Is there a need for me to keep the one folder

that contains all the separate events? Can I just delete that folder? or Right click and delete Album containing those events? The reason I ask is that it seems that after syncing to iPhone you have that folder

appear as an Album on the iPhone (with all individual events in it) and all the Individual Albums showing up. Too many entries to scroll through.

You have got to be kidding!  If I wanted to do everything by hand I would go back to using Windows.
