Q: Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3

Problem description:

Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3. 1 or 2 times a day. Not sure if it is software or hardware. I did not have this problem with Mavericks. I require full functionality of Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection (CS6), Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X and many other graphic design and sound design apps. Should I backgrade to Mavericks?

I tried holding D key for at least 3 minutes when booting. Hardware Test did not appear. The Mac Pro (Early 2009) booted normally into Finder. I do not have original DVDs that shipped with unit. Problem may be that I have a non-Mac version of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card. Therefore, no EFI boot screen is visible. What are my options for running AHT? Does AHT require an EFI boot screen? I do have a Mac OS X Snow Leopard installer DVD but it is the Apple commercial version (one disk only).

Are these encrypted? 10% free space generally and way too little.

A clean system would be perfect to start fresh. Looks like it needs it and may have been more than a while since the last time.

Kernel panic, machine check, detected by multiple processors, status 4 or 5, occurs in CPU Power management is almost always an uncorrectable RAM Memory error.

I have not been able to run the Apple Hardware Test. I have tried copying Mac Pro 4,1 AHT .dmg to a boot USB stick. No go.

Are you saying I have a bad memory module? I could try removing sticks one by one to see if that cures the shutdown problem.

Other forum members suggest a clean OS install.

You may have other problems as well.

But the reason for the panic you posted was an uncorrectable memory error.

If you choose to remove modules to find the problem module, use "half interval search". Remove half the modules. Run until you know which half contains the problem. Keep dividing the groups in half and you will quickly converge on the problem.

You can also go about your work as usual, but check this report every half hour or so. The report is STATIC, so you must choose refresh off its menus or invoke the report again to get new data.

     Menu > About this Mac > ( More Info) >  Report > Memory

    graphic from anandtech.com

Modules that are accumulating errors are BAD, but Error Correction keeps that from being a problem, yet. An uncorrectable double-bit error will halt the machine (just as in your kernel panic report) to keep from poisoning your data.

Grant: Thanks for your explanation and direction. I have removed 5 1GB memory modules and have placed the 3 remaining 4GB modules into slots 1,2 and 3. These 4GB sticks by OWC were purchased about 18 months ago (which is not necessarily assurance that they are any better than the OEM 1GB Nanya modules). I'll keep checking System Information's Memory report every so often, as advised.

It could be that the memory errors would have occurred even if I had not upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps I was too quick to blame Mac OS X 10.10.3 for the daily panics.

However, I did receive this "inside info" yesterday from a local tech advisor which made me think that I was wrangling with OS and software incompatibilities:

As for Yosemite 10.10, the .2 release was pretty good, and I was just getting to let people know it was OK to do, and then they came out with 10.3. After heavy prompting my Apple contacts admit that there are memory issues still “under the hood," older software issues (Adobe CS6 & CC, Office 2011, Firefox and Chrome browsers, etc), security software issues, Library and Finder issues. Let's just say they are still working on it, and at this time I can’t recommend it as the “go to” OS X version yet. I have two friends who are both inside Apple developers and they both gave me the same story about 10.10’s memory issues, but bigger are the library calls that older apps make that simply aren’t there in the new OS and so they do it over and over. Both also said current Final Cut is NOT stable on 10.10, so a 10.9 drive to run that would be a really good idea. The video card isn’t likely the issue, but FCPX itself is calling resources that aren’t there.

I will be sure to report back as I achieve stability or do continued troubleshooting with my Mac Pro 4,1 (early 2009). Thank you all for your ideas. I will not be able to run Apple Hardware Test unless I order an original installer disk 2 from Apple or take my behemoth to the Genius Bar for testing. All my graphic arts apps and data are backed up onto an external USB drive and to a Synology NAS box, which are both accessible by my MacBook Pro 17" (4,1) which is running Yosemite 10.10.3 without panics or crashes.

Don't give up so easily! You can run AHT if you are able to set it up…

    1. Find the name of the AHT for your hardware… https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest
    2. Download the relevant one & try reinstalling it into /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
    3. If that fails to boot try burning the AHT to CD.
    4. If that fails image the AHT to a USB stick… (my script will do that https://gist.github.com/drewreece/2e5eed7dbfbd5dd7e929)

AHT is never definitive so run multiple loops in extended & normal mode to hope to see any errors. Also use loop mode (cmd+L) from cold to allow temperature related issues to appear.

Alternatively run rember (which only tests the RAM the OS is not using).

    Rember | Kelley Computing

Or grab just about any Linux distro & run memtest from a Live CD or live USB boot.

NOTE: I made the script because burning to CD & reinstalling AHT was a pain that often failed to work - the script was reliable YMMV.

Thanks, Drew. I tried for over two hours to launch AHT. I did try your script. I downloaded Mac Pro 4,1 022-4149-A.dmg and mounted it. I ran this script (I named my USB stick AHTDOneTwo):

cd /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo/ && sudo bless --mount /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo --setBoot --file diags.efi && sudo reboot

    I get this error:

    Can't statfs diags.efi

I searched for a resolution of that error but came up empty.

So, I use Pacifist to clone Mac Pro 4,1 022-4149-A.dmg to the USB stick. I could not boot into the USB stick. Then, using Pacifist, I copied .diagnostics to my boot drive's System: Library: Cores Services.   I pressed D for at least 5 minutes but the monitor stays dark. I cannot tell if AHT has launched. My graphics card (as noted above) does not have an EFI boot partition. I think I need to flash my non-Mac-edition NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card.

The good news, so far, is that the Mac Pro has run for more than 14 hours without a panic shutdown (while sleeping and while running some heavy duty Adobe CS6 apps). I removed 4 of the 8 memory modules (as noted above), No errors have been reported in System Information: Memory (I hot refresh every 20 minutes or so).

I think you've probably nailed it by tossing the 1GB sticks. If I were you I wouldn't give any of them a second chance once you've proved one of them is faulty - if they were all from the same batch, and have lived the same life they are all suspect. Just buy a couple of 4GBs instead.

You need to be careful about paths when using bless, your current directory is not defined during the reboot process, try:

sudo bless --mount /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo --setBoot --file /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo/diags.efi && sudo reboot

or wherever diags.efi actually will be.

    C.
