Q: Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3

Problem description:

Kernel panic in Yosemite 10.10.3. 1 or 2 times a day. Not sure if it is software or hardware. I did not have this problem with Mavericks. I require full functionality of Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection (CS6), Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X and many other graphic design and sound design apps. Should I backgrade to Mavericks?

When using my script to create a 'USB AHT' the disk should appear in the boot picker (hold alt at startup). Does that work for you? I'm unclear which parts fail due to the non-OS X graphics card in your Mac.

You used Pacifist? It's not needed to copy over the diagnostics, I guess it's a workaround for hidden files I never thought of

    The diags.efi is at…

    /Volumes/AHTDOne/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/diags.efi

    on the downloaded .dmg

    Or it should be…

    /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/diags.efi

on the USB stick you made

It does look like you have isolated the fault according to the lack of new panics.

    com.nvidia.CUDA 1.1.0

    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.9.1

    com.kernsafe.driver.kscsiprt 1.0.0d1

    com.usb-audio.usb 3.3.0

    at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 4240

These applications may be the problem. Try uninstalling the using the developer's uninstall instructions. I would start with Paceap since it is showing something for Snow Leopard.

Drew: Thank you. You were right about the path needing to be /Volumes/AHTDOneTwo/System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics/diags.efi

I was able to bless the USB stick without that error mentioned above. The MacPro rebooted but all that appears is a black screen. I'm sure that my graphics card is at fault because it does not have an EFI boot in firmware. Whenever I boot normally I see nothing until the Desktop appears. I saved a couple hundred bucks by buying a non-Mac edition of this graphics card. I will try flashing the card – something I have been putting off for the past 9 months.

I do think my panic shutdowns are cured since removing the five 1GB memory modules and leaving in the three newer 4GB sticks. I'll give it another couple days before declaring complete relief. 12GB might be enough for the graphics, sound and video editing I do. I may buy more 4GB sticks but this Mac Pro 4,1 (early 2009) has memory limits. Gotta check on that.

Thanks to all for your expert guidance.

Pace is needed for my iLok USB dongle – license management for several of my audio editing and DAW apps. If I upgrade from iLok 1 to iLok 2, it may result in taking away that compatibility warning. https://www.paceap.com/ilok.html

Nvidia CUDA is needed for my graphics card. But I'll check to see if this driver is actually still needed.

I need the universal USB audio driver on order to use my Digidesign Mbox 1 with Logic Pro X, Cubase, Premiere, FCPX, etc.

My kernel panic problem is not solved. After enjoying three days of stability, my Mac Pro experienced another kernel panic at night, while I slept. See panic report below. Could it be a faulty logic board or processor? I could test the remaining three 4 GB memory modules. I will have to resume my quest to run Apple Hardware Test or use a third party app (as suggested) to do live testing of memory not in use. Running AHT will require doing a firmware flash of my non-Mac-edition NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 graphics card. As explained before, my graphics card does not have an EFI boot.

Or, maybe Yosemite 10.10.3 is at fault, after all. I never had these kernel panics before 10.10.3. I am stumped. Might be time for a trip to the Apple Genius Bar with my big boy Mac Pro.

BTW, I turned off TRIM and deinstalled Trim Enabler. Note that I do not boot from my Kingston SSD drive – it is only used as a scratch disk for video editing.

Eric, I removed all things NVIDIA, Geforce and CUDA (including com.nvidia.CUDA 1.1.0) and now I cannot get a Desktop screen on either of my monitors. Everything is black, Looks like I will have to move my internal boot drive to my MacBook Pro (via a BlacX box) to reinstall the NVIDIA graphics drivers. Whoever said they weren't needed with my generic PC graphics card was wrong. The saga continues...

Do you have a 10.10 installer that will install a version below 10.10.3? If so you could install to a new disk or partition & see if the OS is stable. It's a pain since you don't know if it is an interaction with your apps, however it may allow you to see if it is 10.10.3 alone.

I would also keep switching the memory modules to see if it is one of those or possibly one of the memory slots at fault (does your model have memory risers?).

I don't know if this will be a way to provoke a panic, but if it you need a way to load all the memory you can try the memory pressure command…

    memory_pressure -l critical

That will cause the OS to allocate as much RAM as possible, see the manual for more on that…

    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man1/memory_pressure.1.html

There are other ways to max out CPU or disk IO too.

If you can find a way to reproduce the panic you can at least switch connected parts & see if the are part of the issue, maybe someone can pick to what the fault is in that panic log.

Drew, after my initial success with getting less frequent kernel panics, I am now struggling with disabling TRIM – I never should have enabled it using Cindori Trim Enabler. After a kernel panic last night, I rebooted my Mac Pro and all I got was a black screen. But I bet my Mac was actually stuck at a gray screen with a stop sign. My non-Mac graphics card was not letting me see this.

From Cindori's web site at https://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/

If you try to boot a Trim-enabled system with the kext-signing setting re-activated, you will be met by a gray screen with a stop sign:

    prohibitory_sign

This is your system telling you that a driver has been modified, and is not allowed to load. To avoid this situation, you can make sure to disable Trim before performing any hardware maintenance or PRAM reset on your Mac.

Furthermore, I think I should not have removed all my NVIDIA, Geforce and CUDA extensions and kexts (I may have misunderstood what Eric was suggesting). After getting a black screen at reboot, I tried reinstalling the latest NVIDIA drivers by using Pacifist – my Mac Pro internal drive was temporarily put into a BlacX box hooked up via USB to my MBP 17. I installed WebDriver-346.01.02f02.pkg and cudadriver-7.0.36-macos.dmg in that order. I don't think the installation was successful.

Well, since I couldn't boot into Yosemite any more, I followed the uninstall instructions very closely here, but without success: https://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/

So, in desperation I am now doing a clean install of Yosemite 10.10.3, invoked from my Recovery Partition. I hope this restores the video drivers and gives me a non-TRIM, kext-signing system. Apple really screwed up on this. People with SSD drives need TRIM!

    Did you try Cindori's fix…

Recovering from stop sign on boot screen

    https://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/

The developer mode needs to be set in the nvram arguments. Any OS that boots should be able to set that, so when you have 10.10 running again try that to see if the old 10.10.3 disk will boot.

Yes, that is the same fix I mentioned in my post right above your post. Maybe you missed it. It worked the first time I tried it a couple days ago. Today, no luck.

I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.10.3 (via Restore Partition) and I am back up and running. Both monitors are working. Now let's see if I get another kernel panic.

This is the same hard drive with Yosemite that has had all the problems. I had run Disk Doctor on it and repaired permissions using Disk Utility, while the drive was in the BlacX caddy hooked to my MacBook Pro. But that was not enough to get it to boot into the Desktop after throwing it back into the Mac Pro housing. Still not sure if the problem was missing NVIDIA drivers or TRIM being enabled. I had done what you mentioned – developer mode was set to 1 in the nvram arguments.

All my apps and docs on the startup volume are intact, by the way.

I wasn't clear what was done with respect to Cindori.

You may not be able to boot an OS from a Mac Pro on a Macbook Pro, there are drivers that are usually excluded or incompatible. Sometimes you can get similar hardware to boot, but it rarely works over several versions of different hardware. At the very least you need to boot into safe mode first to cause kernel caches to be rebuilt on next boot.

That is another kernel panic, machine check, detected by multiple processors, was executing in CPU power management. That is a RAM memory problem like your original panic log.

Not sure what memory risers are. Good thought about a bad memory slot – never occurred to me. Apple recommends that three modules be placed into slots 1,2 and 3. Not sure if it can run with modules in other slots.

I'll try the stress (memory pressure) test you mentioned. Thanks!
