Q: iMac very slow

Hi, so I've deleted Norton, and CleanMyMac and Trusteer etc. Doesn't seem to have made much difference. I've also done repair disk and repaired permissions using Disk Utility.  Also reloaded OSX Lion. However, Mac seems to work ok when started up in Safe mode....what does that tell us?

Hello again, just couple of other things to consider before resorting to a hardware problem. As the machine seems fine in Safe mode I can only assume its still a software issue. There are a few extensions that are dated as modified back when the problems started (see list below)

A couple are "Pseudoextensions"...no idea what they are, and one called "unsupported" could this be the problem? I'm also subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud so I'm wondering if there are any known issues there?

I'm also having trouble with my Time Machine back ups... doesn't seem to be deleting old backups to make space for new and just ends up saying "indexing backup" for hours and hours. I did have a back up interrupted the other day, everything just froze and I had to shut down from the power button. Now I have a file from 4 days ago on the Time Machine drive which says .inProgress. I've stopped and restarted backup a few times but I know there is not quite enough space on the disk to do a full back up so was expecting Time Machine to erase old back ups and start again.....it was "indexing backup" all night. I'm trying to do a full back up incase all else fails and I have to restore the whole lot. However, if I enter Time Machine (whilst running in safe mode) I get a black background, no "Star Wars", and the Restore option is greyed out. I've repaired this external disc using Disk Utility and it says it seems to be ok. It's a Toshiba 1TB.

I should also mention that I tried the hardware test as directed by the link you sent. I am on a mid 2010 i Mac i5 running OS Lion 10.7.5 so  I do not have any Install Discs for Lion. When I start up with D key pressed I do not get AHT icon as expected, I was asked to select a HD Disk and then a network, which I did, but my network password just keeps being rejected. If I go back and select Recovery HD it takes me to the 4 options, to reinstall Lion ( I did this already ), use Disk Utility, on-line help etc , but no options to test hardware.
