Q: How to re-install OS after erasing drive? (MBP Mid-2010)

So my sister decided to sell her 13" MacBook Pro (mid-2010). I decided to then wipe her drive and just reinstall the OS, so I booted up into the recovery disk and erased the HD, I then tried to re-download OSX Lion from the recovery page, but it said I couldn't. After browsing through some other threads, I discovered that since it's no longer supported, I can't download it.

So I decided to download OSX Yosemite and use a USB flash drive. I tried using DiskMaker X for the USB, but when I booted up the laptop, it wasn't being read.

What should I do?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), MBP mid-2010

Did you try booting to Internet Recovery since OS X Recovery is not allowing you to download.

Internet Recovery will download OS X Snow Leopard directly from Apple's Servers which I believe is what originally came with that model

Booting into Internet Recovery is simple

Instead of holding Command + R at boot just hold Command + Option + R and that will take you to Internet Recovery

After booting to Internet Recovery it will make sure you are connected then you should be able to just click Reinstall OS X and verify your Apple ID.

After the install is complete you can then update the computer to OS X Yosemite for free if you like or purchase Lion, or Mountain Lion from store.apple.com for $19.99

Post back and let me know if that helps and works for you.

I'm getting an error after I input my credentials.

    "This item is temporarily unavailable."

    "Try again later."

Try rebooting the computer into internet recovery.

Try restarting your router for your internet. If you have the ability to use a Wired Connection do so.

If that doesn't work, try another network as well at a friends, family members, or local Coffee shop with free wifi.

I've gotten that error before, all I had to do was restart my router and try again. But that was me.

I did reboot into internet recovery, I also tried using a wired connection, and I also reset my router but no go.

Tried my neighbor's wifi as well, still the same error message.

You must install the original shipping OS for that Mac which was Snow Leopard unless you installed the firmware update that made Internet Recovery available for that Mac. MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) EFI Firmware Update 2.5

For Internet Recovery to work, you must completely remove the Recovery partition (which I think you might have done when you stated you formatted it--you would have needed to use the Partition tab in Disk Utility to create a single partition on the drive).

I'm still not sure if you'll be able to install Lion or if you can install Snow Leopard anymore after the Firmware update.

If you sort that out, I'd like to know.

If she did not install that Firmware Update, then find the Install DVD that came with it and install Snow Leopard.

The new owner can install whatever OS they can. You must sell the Mac with the original install media.

She does not have the original disk anymore as she bought her laptop used as well. Prior to me erasing her HD, I checked and saw that it was running 10.7.5, which is why I didn't create a recovery disk as I thought I would be able to download the OS from the internet.

i'm not sure where to find it, but look for the Boot ROM/SMC Version as shown  in the link I posted.

If the version on her mac is earlier than the one listed, then you'll need ot get the original install disks from Apple. They'll need the serial number.

You might try the second option on this link: Determining BootROM or Firmware Version - Apple Support

Never mind. For some reason the USB with Yosemite decided to work. All's well now. Thanks for all the help.

You can't sell it with Yosemite installed. It violates the license agreement and the version of Yosemite will be licensed to you. The new owner could not update it without your AppleID and password.
