Q: iTunes Match & iCloud: Do I Need Both?

Looking to completely uncouple my iPhone from the (very old) laptop that has iTunes on it right now (for syncing purposes).  Consequently, I'm looking to move my music collection (some of which isn't from iTunes; some was purchased on Amazon MP3, and some was ripped from CDs when I was busy moving to an all-digital music collection) into the cloud, and downloading to my iPhone from there.

The question I have is this: if I just purchase a given amount of iCloud storage and back up all my music there, will it automatically update when I make new purchases?

Or do I need to instead purchase iTunes Match so it makes cloud backups of all my music?

Or do I need both? I'm a bit confused, so your help is appreciated.

    Hey Silentman73,

At the end of the day, subscribing to iTunes Match is up to you. For your situation, I would recommend using iTunes Match because you have multiple sources of music that was not purchased from the iTunes Store. So what iTunes Match will do is scan your iTunes library on your computer and will either match the music with what is in its catalog or it will upload the music that it cannot match. After that is done, all your music will be able to be played from the cloud. Anything that is purchased in the future form the iTunes Store will automatically upload to iTunes Match. If you still make purchases from CD or other sources, those too can be matched when imported into iTunes. Check out the articles below for more information if you need it.

Norm, thanks so much for the info.  So if I'm understanding you right, I'd need to probably do one final sync to my laptop from my phone to insure all the music is fully up to date, and from that point forward, I'd only need to connect up to the laptop again if I purchased music from a source other than iTunes, and anything I acquire from iTunes is just automatically available via the cloud from that point?

Likewise, I'm assuming that anything I currently have locally stored on my iPhone will stay locally stored after the subscription begins?

    Hi Silentman73,

Actually, you will not need to sync your iPhone with your computer. Once you have setup iTunes Match on your computer and then turn iTunes Match on your iPhone, your entire library will show up. Then you can download any content to your iPhone or stream it. That would be entirely up to you.

    Take it easy,
