What is Apple's fix for the nsurlsessiond issue of uploading data to the point it's hogging bandwidth?

I had this issue and Apple Support had a fix that worked. 1. Do a backup. 2. Go into System Preferences, iCloud. Uncheck the box for iCloud Drive. Restart the computer, I would do a Shut Down and then Restart. After the computer comes back up and you log in, check Activity Monitor. You should not see the process nsurlsessiond. Go back to System Preferences and recheck the box for iCloud Drive and restart again. You should now see nsurlsessiond in Activity Monitor, but using WAY less bandwidth. What support told me was my computer was caught in a loop, uploading and then deleting all my photos from iCloud Drive and then re-uploading them. This appears to have solved the problem.

    I'm not sure, but they must have sent it to me. The nsurlsessionid process on both logged in users plus the system process hasn't sent or received a single byte in the 26 hours the system has been up.

    This will allow you to limit your upload speed to your liking, so that iCloud Drive continues to function properly (albeit more slowly) while you can use the internet normally. Experiment with the set upload speed based on the speed of your connection, be sure to fill in the speed in kbps, not KB/s (e.g. for 80 KB/s, you multiply by 8 to get 640).

    I've just purchased a brand new Macbook, running 10.10.2, just a few days ago.  I tried to find why the net was so slow, and it's this nsurlsessionid hogging all the bandwidth.   But it's not uploading - it's only downloading...  Constantly.  Does anyone know what it's downloading?   Where's the data going?  I've never used iCloud or any other cloud based storage.

     

    It's one thing to slow down the net connection unreasonably, but to lose gigabytes of space to unknown files is doubly frustrating.

    I am currently suffering the same problem. Not knowing the cause, I have used my Little Snitch program to set up a "deny" rule, and the flood of downloading has stopped. This allows me to use the computer normally for now. If it is some kind of iCloud dump, I can reopen the permission at night.

    I could not agree with the you more with this discussion.  I've had apple products for decades.. I will continue to do so, but for the first time, I've enabled PF (yosemite's rather convoluted but effective firewall), and  I also enable root on all my apple products. Why?  Shutting down all of local daemons FROM YOSEMITE.  I'm not so worried about external attacks anymore,  but I'm tired of Apple's multitude of hidden and newly introduced network daemons  eating my BW.  Don't get me wrong, some are useful, but most are not, and hardly any are documented.. "Apple knows best" ?  I don't think so, but even when I do discover network hogging daemons quietly running in the background,   they are  hard to disable via the normal route root launchctl.  But wait launchctl has been completely re-written for Yosemite, so half the time the new commands don't work, and its pretty much undocumented as well.  Interesting Apple found the time to make a good attempt and having all the tracking daemons in fine running order, but disabling side wel that's TBD !!  don't worry its still pretty easy to neutralize them, and so far I have found no ill-effects.. everything still works fine, well much faster because I have my BW back.

    It's a slippery slope both  apple and google are  now blindly sliding down. As revenues start to tighten up, and after years of massive profits, its obvious where they will be heading next to keep those billions coming in the coffers.... us, the user-base with all our meta- data.... I've spent the last two weeks disabling / blocking  all of the network daemons Apple has introduced in Yosemite,   two weeks before that I spent disabling all the Ads  and tracking google has introduced on their mobile devices... Yet today i found another daemon NSURLSessionD happily blasing away..I did not choose nor will I ever take advice given here to "stop for a day" .

     

    Finally,  if apple (1) told us what they were doing and properly documented how things work instead of being sescretive  (2) made netwok daemons act responsibility, assuming NOT everyone lives in the USA with unlimited BW ( I live in Thailand and  bandwitdh still very much  matters) maybe I would not be so aggressive and annoyed.  However that is not the case, therefore I have been forced to take matters into my own hands.  One last point I started at Cisco Systems as a developer in ip routing, back when Apple was still debugging AppleTalk.  My attitude has been and always will be, computer manafucturers, OEM's Vendors, Ad agencies and the their respective marketing departments  DO NOT decide,  unilaterally    what information to send from my computer,  I decide,  . The last thing I want is an arms race in terms of sending out data without my permission, but I won't sit around like some helpless victim.. it Apple continues on this path so will I  (as will many others). Ultimately Apple can make it impossible, and we can stop buying their products, however I sincerely hope it does not come to that.   

     

    In closing just have a look at all the daemons in LaunchAgents (users based) and LaunchDaemons (system based) available to run.Again I am not saying every single one of these use network asserts, but alot do, alot are not documented, and now alot of been disabled thank you very much.i

    I could not agree with the you more with this discussion.  I've had apple products for decades.. I will continue to do so, but for the first time, I've enabled PF (yosemite's rather convoluted but effective firewall), and  I also enable root on all my apple products. Why?  Shutting down all of local daemons FROM YOSEMITE.  I'm not so worried about external attacks anymore,  but I'm tired of Apple's multitude of hidden and newly introduced network daemons  eating my BW.  Don't get me wrong, some are useful, but most are not, and hardly any are documented.. "Apple knows best" ?  I don't think so, but even when I do discover network hogging daemons quietly running in the background,   they are  hard to disable via the normal route root launchctl.  But wait launchctl has been completely re-written for Yosemite, so half the time the new commands don't work, and its pretty much undocumented as well.  Interesting Apple found the time to make a good attempt and having all the tracking daemons in fine running order, but disabling side wel that's TBD !!  don't worry its still pretty easy to neutralize them, and so far I have found no ill-effects.. everything still works fine, well much faster because I have my BW back.

    It's a slippery slope both  apple and google are  now blindly sliding down. As revenues start to tighten up, and after years of massive profits, its obvious where they will be heading next to keep those billions coming in the coffers.... us, the user-base with all our meta- data.... I've spent the last two weeks disabling / blocking  all of the network daemons Apple has introduced in Yosemite,   two weeks before that I spent disabling all the Ads  and tracking google has introduced on their mobile devices... Yet today i found another daemon NSURLSessionD happily blasing away..I did not choose nor will I ever take advice given here to "stop for a day" .

     

    Finally,  if apple (1) told us what they were doing and properly documented how things work instead of being sescretive  (2) made netwok daemons act responsibility, assuming NOT everyone lives in the USA with unlimited BW ( I live in Thailand and  bandwitdh still very much  matters) maybe I would not be so aggressive and annoyed.  However that is not the case, therefore I have been forced to take matters into my own hands.  One last point I started at Cisco Systems as a developer in ip routing, back when Apple was still debugging AppleTalk.  My attitude has been and always will be, computer manafucturers, OEM's Vendors, Ad agencies and the their respective marketing departments  DO NOT decide,  unilaterally    what information to send from my computer,  I decide,  . The last thing I want is an arms race in terms of sending out data without my permission, but I won't sit around like some helpless victim.. it Apple continues on this path so will I  (as will many others). Ultimately Apple can make it impossible, and we can stop buying their products, however I sincerely hope it does not come to that.   

     

    In closing just have a look at all the daemons in LaunchAgents (users based) and LaunchDaemons (system based) available to run.Again I am not saying every single one of these use network asserts, but alot do, alot are not documented, and now alot of been disabled thank you very much.i

    Oh man. Oh Man oh Man. I almost solely use my Macbook at work, and with a mobile hot-spot, since I don't have the interwebs out here... and this darn thing has cost me well over 100$ in extra data already. (Anytime I even forget to punch the Stop Nsurlsessiond code I have, it can easily eat up a half a gig quick.) Before I discovered what happened, I opened it up and found it had eaten like 4 gigs in one like not very long session. It was terrible... so terrible. I hate this thing and I never use Icloud or any of that kind of stuff. I love LittleSnitch, but it becomes a pain in the neck to have to keep approving and approving, over and over again. -__- What I would give for there to be a "Hot-Spot." Mode, that would just cut out all the useless data hogging... please Apple, make my dreams come true.

     

    I'm sure somebody posted this already, but copy pasting this into terminal will remedy it temporarily.(Until next boot up)

    Thanks, I've encountered the same problem but only became aware when my internet provider notified me that I had exceeded my 100gig!!! download limit. Wow.. I've also now downloaded little snitch and set up rule to block: nsurlsessiond

    I contacted apple support before to enquire so now I'm going to follow up with these findings.

    I had this issue and Apple Support had a fix that worked. 1. Do a backup. 2. Go into System Preferences, iCloud. Uncheck the box for iCloud Drive. Restart the computer, I would do a Shut Down and then Restart. After the computer comes back up and you log in, check Activity Monitor. You should not see the process nsurlsessiond. Go back to System Preferences and recheck the box for iCloud Drive and restart again. You should now see nsurlsessiond in Activity Monitor, but using WAY less bandwidth. What support told me was my computer was caught in a loop, uploading and then deleting all my photos from iCloud Drive and then re-uploading them. This appears to have solved the problem.

    For me, it turned out to be my iTunes.  I unchecked "iCloud Music Library" in preferences and Nsurlessiond stopped downloading.
