Q: Can you turn off the Apple Watch while charging?

I turn off my Apple Watch at the end of the day and connect it to the charger but it turns back on. The watch will not allow itself to be turned off while connected to the charger. Is this expected behavior?

Apple Watch, iOS 8.3

It is exactly what the iPhone and iPad do.  I haven't tried but, with an iPhone, once it's charging, you can turn it off and it will stay off. That might be a little trickier with the Apple Watch as the act of turning it off, unless you're very careful, might cause it to slip off the charger and then it would turn back on again.

But really, there's no technical reason to turn it off.

Thanks Meg, but the Apple Watch does behave differently from the iPhone and iPad. Both of those can be turned off while charging. The Apple Watch "off" slider is actually greyed out when it's on the charger. It does not appear possible to turn the watch off while it is connected to the charger. This may have been a design choice by Apple, but it seems odd to me...

As I noted, I haven't tried t turn my watch off while charging. Like my phone or my iPad, I don't foresee very many reasons to turn them off. Apparently, Apple doesn't think it necessary to turn off device while charging.

It's normal behavior.  All iOS devices turn on automatically when plugged into a charger and, all of them historically must remain on while charging.  It's only very recently that the iPhone would allow itself to be off and charging.  Don't worry about it.  I'd guess that they kept it the same way with the watch because its so easy for the charging cable to slip off or on while charging.

But surely this is crazy and will make the battery life shortened in the long run . As with most devices and pc's they down time or sleep like you and I , so have this apple watch unable to turn off during overnight charging is mad and very annoying and I hope this is changed with os2 next month . Also I'm not one of these who leaves there iPhone on overnight in case  they get a notification or something ,  I like to turn it off properly so I can

    get sleep (ish) .

I was actually able, after extensive testing, to turn it off while charging. Simply hold the side button, slide it to the end but don't let go yet, and connect its charger till it charges. it will power off and should not power back on. Except- a few of my tests proved that sometimes it would power back on immediately, but most of the time it didn't for me.
