Q: Yosemite Image Capture Does Not Retain Scanner Settings

I scan almost all my paper documents using Image Capture.

I use Epson WF-3520 All-in-One Printer/Scanner.

Downloaded latest Apple software for Epson WF-3520 (Version 9.04) at OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download  - Apple Support

Prior to installation of Yosemite, and download of Apple software for Epson WF-3520 (Version 9.04), the scanner settings I entered remained persistent.

(These settings are: Scan Mode: Document Feeder, Kind: Color, Resolution: 300 dpi, Size: US Letter, Orientation: Duplex, Scan To: Documents, Format:PDF)

Now, after Yosemite installation, upon opening Image Capture, the settings always revert back to what must be default settings and I have to change them all back to my preferences, which becomes frustrating after repeating the process a number of times. The settings in the Epson Scan software, however, do remain persistent.

I have opened the the following files looking for a <key> entry to specify my desired settings to Image Capture, but have not found the setting locations in these files:

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Image_Capture.plist

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ImageCaptureService.plist

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imagent.plist

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.908(restofID).plist

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2.908(restofID).plis t

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Image_Capture.plist.(4 files with various 7 characters here)

/Library/Image Capture/Devices/EPSON Scanner

Please provide any information you can to help me resolve this issue. Thanks.

Follow up to my note of Nov 8, 2014:

In addition to Image Capture not retaining my Epson WF-3520 scan settings (Scan Mode: Document Feeder, Kind: Color, Resolution: 300 dpi, Size: US Letter, Orientation: Duplex, Scan To: Documents, Format:PDF), as detailed in my prior posting, I now see that it also does not Combine pdf documents into a single document when I check-off the box to do so. Rather, it creates another document with the same name and a numerical suffix. So my original scan would be, for example, document.pdf, and the second scan I make, using the same name (document) and checking off the box, "Combine into single document" results in a second document named, document 1.pdf.

This is very frustrating because I scan documents to pdf constantly and am now forced to reapply the settings and combine documents whenever I scan.

The Pre-Yosemite version of Image Capture worked perfectly for me, so does anyone know where I can download a pre-Yosemite version? (I actually had been on Mountain Lion and had not upgraded to Mavericks). I don't know if that would work with Yosemite, but until Apple fixes Image Capture (Epson already told me it is not Epson's issue, of course), it is worth a try if I can find it. Thanks.

Not any help, but please send feedback to Apple about this, especially since this is a change in behavior:

I am having the exact same issues since upgrading to Yosemite. Scan settings are not retained. Also, if I scan and "combine into single document", it works as long as all pages are scanned at the same time. If I try to add another page to the same document, it creates a duplicate file with a numerical suffix as described by the OP. I am using an Epson Workforce 635 and the same issues occur if I access the scanner through Image Capture or by clicking on the Epson Printer icon in the toolbar. Also, I am currently on Yosemite 10.10.1. Any updates on  this? Thanks.

I am still experiencing the same issues as in my original post of Nov 8, 2014 and also the exact same issues as described by kgmn on Dec 11, 2014.

Is there any way to know if Apple techs are actually working on this???

I have two problems outlined in this thread:

    - settings revert back to default settings

    - option "combine in a single document" does not work

I am using a HP7520. Everything was working perfectly before Yosemite.

Any one knows how to signal it to Apple and monitor feedback?

    Thanks and regards

Same here. Settings for different scanners on different Macs running 10.10.2 (and before with 10.10.0 and 10.10.1) are not retained.

FYI, I found that I can use the Image Capture.app from Mavericks 10.9.5 with Yosemite 10.10.2, and it does retain settings EXCEPT for one, 'Scan To' folder location.  That still defaults to the 'Pictures' folder, but everything else seems to be remembered, Mode, Kind, Resolution, Size, Name and Format.

In 10.10.3, it appears Image Capture retains settings, everthing, location, page size, source, B/W or color, DPI, etc.

I upgraded to 10.10.3, which appears to retain settings such as Scan To:. Now, however, it intermittently saves the scan to the prior saved document, not to the name of the new document I am scanning. I have to open the prior scanned document, click "edit-copy-new file from clipboard" and then delete the new scanned pages from the prior document. Image Capture continues to be very frustrating and has been so for over a year. Does anyone else have this issue?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

The problem seems to be resolved with 10.10.3.  I tried it several times and it works.

I had reported a month ago that 10.10.3 seemed to fix this problem; I am posting today after using it a month and carefully observing, that 10.10.3 does NOT completely solve the issue; at least for me.  YMMV.  it appears to be intermittent.  I tried to find a pattern, for example, does it save only within the same session, but revert after a reboot, does it matter what model scanner, and so on.   I tried the version of Image Capture from Mavericks 10.9.5 running on 10.10.3 (yes, it works), but surprisingly, the Mavericks version which had no problem remembering settings under Mavericks, also has issues on Yosemite, which tells me there is more going on here than just the app, in fact I'm guessing it is the TWAIN drivers on Yosemite.

(for lay people, TWAIN, is the standard defined for how computer operating systems should communicate with optical scanners.  In theory, if your scanner supports TWAIN and most scanners in the last ten years do, and your operating system, be it Windows, Mac, Unix whatever has TWAIN system drivers, any software that wants to can access and use the scanner.)

Anyway I could not find a pattern,  to when settings were retained and not, either with the Yosemite or Mavericks version of Image Capture.  Finally my frustration reached a level where I wiped my hands clean and went and purchased VueScan.   A bit pricey for $39.99, but as the Mastercard commercial says: "Being able to use your scanner without aggravation and wanting to throw it out the windows?... Priceless."

If you're fed up, do yourself a favor, get VueScan.  I was tempted to try to install the TWAIN kexts drivers from Mavericks into Yosemite, and see if that fixes the problem, but I'm happy with VueScan and don't want to risk fiddling around and messing up my system.  For you developer types out there, might be an interesting experiment.
